Fooled by Mother Nature…

OK..”It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature”…but what about her fooling us..That’s not nice either!!!

One day it was 75 degrees, the trees are budding and everyone is happy….

The next day it is snowing…What’s up with that?

But I love Mother Nature and I forgive her…

…..This is my “Lady”..I pretend she is “Mother Nature”…she could be…

IMG_2385

I see her from the window where I have my computer..she makes me smile :)

IMG_2380

Today was rainy and dreary..unlike yesterday..so my plans for this post went out the window…literally…

IMG_2364

I am taking pictures from my upper porch today…these are my window boxes overlooking the backyard…no happy golfers out today…:(

IMG_2363

Not even the birds were out on this cold damp day…

I love Cyclamen..

IMG_2369

My tea cart…filled it with Spring blooming flowers…Hoping it would tell Mother Nature to hurry it along…

IMG_2370

There are about 4 flowers/bulbs in this pot..they all seem to be blooming at the same time..

IMG_2382

IMG_2373

IMG_2372

The canvas that leans on my tea cart originally was a piece of art that hung from a dowel..I removed it from
the dowel and stretched it on a canvas..That was way before I started to blog..coulda had a tutorial…

The Softer Side of Spring

While visiting my brother and sister in law, I always head over to Dawsonville, Georgia to the outlet mall

there…It is a one of my favorites as it has a Pottery Barn Outlet there…My all time favorite though

is the one in San Antonio, Texas..truly awesome…

…..While strolling the aisles at Pottery Barn, I came across these adorable bird plates..thus, my

inspiration for my next table setting…

I remembered that I had an old brass bird cage somewhere…so I scoured the closet..took out the Annie Sloan

Chalk Paint and went to town…Yes, it paints over metal…how great is that?

IMG_2330

…so far so good

IMG_2331

…after two coats

IMG_2338

…I placed the bird cage in an arrangement that I had

IMG_2337

IMG_2339

…The cute litte ceramic bird came from Carolina Pottery..I should have bought a pair..it was $2

IMG_2345

…The bird plate (Pottery Barn)..the brown edged plate underneath is Noritake..and then Lenox Butler’s Pantry

……Tablecloth is Ralph Lauren, napkin is Williams Sonoma, goblet American Fostoria

IMG_2343

IMG_2344

IMG_2335

IMG_2333

…The arrangement is in a painted decorative tin container, purchased over 10 years ago

IMG_2336

IMG_2332

IMG_2349

…The bird plate had no contrasting color on the rim, so I borrowed my daughter-in-law’s Noritake stoneware
……that had a brown edging and thought it worked out perfect

IMG_2346

IMG_2347

…We are all looking forward to Spring!!

Love hearing from you and enjoying your comments!!

I Wish It Were My Kitchen…

This past week I have been traveling with hubby..Savannah, South Florida, then Northern Georgia…I spent a day in

South Florida helping a very dear friend…then off to North Georgia to visit with my brother and sister in law.

I have been somewhat away from the computer this past week due to my travels..

My brother and sister in law have just built their retirement home…well, they call it that, but it is NOT

…your typical retirement home. They go back and forth from South Fla to Georgia until he actually retires…

…It is over 5,000 square feet…yes, there is a 5 in front of the 3 zeros…

So I decided to take a few pics of their home..They are still in the process of completing the rooms..so I

will focus on the kitchen…yes, the kitchen I wish I had

…Please pardon the colors in the photos…it has been dreary off and on and had to turn on the lights, so the actual colors are distorted…looks bright yellow instead of a softer hue…

IMG_2282

One side of the kitchen..

IMG_2287

The other side of the kitchen…

IMG_2283

Instead of a wine cooler..they installed a beverage cooler..

IMG_2311

Beautiful stove with griddle and grill..and my favorite..the pot filler!…To the right of the stove is the food warming drawer..ANOTHER FAVORITE OF MINE…

IMG_2285

Faux stacked stone were used as backsplashes as opposed to tile..Tile was used in the stove area…

IMG_2289

The island measures 6 x 7 feet…the cabinetry is an almond glaze..

IMG_2314

A large walk in pantry with beautiful glass door…

IMG_2268

This area is what we call the butler’s pantry. This area was originally the elevator shaft…Not currently wanting the elevator (nor the $20,000 price tag), I suggested to place a butler’s pantry in that area..worked out well as it is the first thing you see when entering the kitchen from the foyer/loggia area…Stacked stone was placed around the archway for texture and definition of the area…They loved the look of the stone surrounding the archway so much, that they continued the look by placing the stone on the backsplash areas..

IMG_2318

Directly below the butler’s pantry on the lower level elevator area..that area was turned into a “wine room”..cool huh?…(thank you, I shall pat myself on the back for those ideas)…

IMG_2319

Since we are downstairs..I may as well show you the “mini kitchen area”..I do not think my first kitchen was that big!

IMG_2288

I am such a fan of trim work..I say, add as much of it early in the building process, for it is so much more expensive after the fact, as everything else…The wall color is looking more true to form…Trim color is Benjamin Moore Huntington Beige. You can see the reflections of the prisms she has on the windows..

IMG_2307

My sister-in-law loves collecting beautiful pottery…the following are some of her treasures…

IMG_2308

IMG_2259

Moving on to the dining room…Table by Pottery Barn…Lighting is Casa by Hinkley…Has a touch of Mission and Asian feel…the feel she was after…

IMG_2276

IMG_2277

IMG_2261

Another favorite of mine is her Family Tree…this dates back to the 1700′s…it is amazing…

IMG_2263

IMG_2278

This rocking chair is 6 generations old..and look at the complementing accessory that is very important to one of the home’s owners…

IMG_2275

And meet a member of their family…His name is Corky..

IMG_2321

His “crib” adjacent to the home theater…

IMG_2322

My sister-in-law’s little slice of Florida…

IMG_2270

The foyer and stairwell..Sorry about the colors..dreary day..and only time to photograph before we left…

IMG_2317

Love this mirror..We got it at “The Dump” in Atlanta last year…it is by Uttermost..and was the uttermost low price!

IMG_2290

A little alcove leading into one of the many bedrooms..Mirror purchased by Ballard Designs in their store in Atlanta..got it for a great price…Again..had to use the flash and colors are not great…

IMG_2291

IMG_2296

The Powder Room..

IMG_2299

IMG_2298

IMG_2251

The Main Guest Room…as I stated previously the wall colors are distorted due to the lighting…

IMG_2256

IMG_2254

The fireplace in the Guest Room!!..TV over the fireplace…a luxurious suite…who would want to leave..It is a double sided fireplace..also faces the lower patio…Both patio/porches have fireplaces in them…

IMG_2252

IMG_2266

Speaking of porches/patios…The upper porch..Furniture by Lane

IMG_2309

Well that is a “little bit” of their “Retirement Home”..A work in progress and off to a great start…

Hope you enjoyed the tour…I will be showing more of their beautiful home in the coming year…

Please give a “shout out” and let them know how much you enjoyed their tour….

My Funny Valentine…..

I would like to introduce to you the inspiration behind my whole being…

This inspiration came to me way back in the 2nd grade…

However, I lost this inspiration when I was 10 years old ( I moved away) …but miraculously came back 5 years later…

596758861309

Meet my inspiration, the love of my life….my best friend…my sweet hubby….

……While vacationing with friends in Canada, my friend Linda took this picture. We both feel this photo
depicts his personality to a tee…(Hey, he was voted Best Personality in high school..)

He IS my MY FUNNY VALENTINE…He wakes up every morning at 5 am. (ugh) to begin his exercise routine..

…happy, chipper, with a smile on his face, sometimes whistling a happy tune…

……………HE IS ABSOLUTELY THE HAPPIEST PERSON I KNOW……

….HE MAKES ME LAUGH…

…………..EVERY DAY……

He is kind….He is thoughtful…He has the highest level of commitment…..

………..He lives life each day with the utmost sense of integrity..the most honest person I know….

….He is the most wonderful father and grandfather…

……………………….the backbone of our family………..

……….Most of all….he is my biggest cheerleader…He encourages me to…

………………….REACH FOR THE STARS…DREAM BIG…AND NEVER GIVE UP!…………………..

…After 42 years of marriage (yes I was married when I was 2..)…

each day is an incredible, adventurous, journey with the man I so love, MY FUNNY VALENTINE…I am truly blessed…

FIESTA IN THE DINER…

Many years ago, while browsing in an antique shop with my sister, I came across a set of very colorful, happy

dishes…I was immediately drawn to the bright colors..The store owner told me that they were Fiestaware.

…….Fiestaware?…that certainly is a great name for them as they were so “festive”!!!

The store owner had a place setting of 4 in the various colors of yellow, light green, turquoise and ivory and

the price was right…$20 for the entire set (dinner plate, bread plate, cup and saucer, a total of 16

pieces)….At that time, I figured, what the heck, for $20, I will buy them..

…….WELL…soon after I purchased them, they appeared on the cover of Country Living Magazine…needless to

say..no longer are the sets of 4 for $20…Then came my quest to complete the collection of the 5 original colors

and the red (actually orange) that came into production 2 years after the original 5 colors.

…….So today, I am setting my dinette table in our “diner” that is located in our media room.

………………………..HOPE YOU ENJOY A BLAST FROM THE PAST!!…………………………………….

IMG_2126

I am using the yellow and turquoise today..the bowls were a gift from my sister. Fiestaware was introduced in 1936 by the Homer Laughlin Pottery Company. They introduced 5 original colors of blue (cobalt), turquoise, yellow, light green, and ivory. Two years later, they introduced the red, which really is orange…

IMG_2132

I placed my cute kitty “days of the week” tea towels under each place setting…

IMG_2129

I thought for a moment the white dots were chips!..Whew, they are just the light reflecting off the dishes!

IMG_2137

These cute frosted vintage glasses belonged to my mother-in-law.

IMG_2131

I placed an African Violet in a small pitcher

IMG_2134

IMG_2128

Creamer and sugar bowl in yellow..The teapot is Lipton Tea…antique tin of Lipton Tea

IMG_2140

The Lipton tea sugar bowl and creamer..in the background is a Fiestaware yellow platter…

IMG_2138

IMG_2145

Diner table necessities..straws, napkins, Fiestaware yellow salt and pepper, and mustard jar by Hall.

IMG_2141

IMG_2144

Since Valentine’s Day is around the corner..I placed a vintage stand up Valentine given to me by my sister..Don’t they look like the Campbell Soup Kids?

IMG_2135

Covered butter dish by McCoy…

IMG_2142

More Fiesta..

IMG_2162

The “Diner”..we originally were planning to build a bar on the right side of this area..but it morphed into a Diner of sorts, allowing me to place my vintage pieces in that area…I sold many of my antiques prior to moving. I think I am having some seller’s remorse on some things…

IMG_2163

IMG_2148

My pie safe..a gift from my hubby, MANY years ago!!

IMG_2159

IMG_2155

IMG_2149

My old Pepsi wooden 6 bottle carrier..with my Shirley Temple Royal Crown fan..

IMG_2151

My Dazey Butter Churn..a vintage Campbell Soup Ad..cheese box with jello recipe books..

IMG_2160

My Lance cracker and Tom’s Peanut Jars..Notice the Jelly Belly dispenser is empty!

IMG_2157

And across the way are my vintage picnic baskets..

IMG_2158

I love collecting old Salesman calling cards..I especially love this one as it has my maiden name on it…How great a find was that?!!

IMG_2164

This is one of my favorite vintage Valentine post cards…HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!!!!

Hope you enjoyed my “Diner”…Also known as “Graylyn’s Diner”..she loves it…I see a sign coming in the future..

Please feel free to leave me a comment. Would love to hear from you!!..

Wild About Mother Nature

IMG_0918

When the sun was just coming up..

IMG_1095

The view 30 minutes later…

…Of all the photos I have taken, I think these are one of my all-time favorites..

…It was taken from our hotel room window of the beautiful Fairmont Hotel, in Lake Louise, Canada.

Can you imagine waking up to this most spectacular view?? I would wake up just before the sun came up

to see the changing views of the lake and mountains.

…There is a beautiful window seat in the room so you can sit and “enjoy the view”..

Today, I am joining Grits and Glamour’s “WILD ABOUT MOTHER NATURE” Link party…

…I have some “real” Mother Nature images to show you and also some “wanna be” natural images…

….So hope you sit back and “enjoy the view”…

IMG_0572.JPG

And who doesn’t love the beauty of Aspen, Colorado

IMG_0166.JPG

And a beautiful snow scene that Mother Nature brought to us on a cold N.C. day..a view from our back porch..

IMG_2290

Mother Nature’s Beautiful Autumn Day..We took a leisurely boat ride with a group of friends on Jordan Lake, which is a few stones throw (well maybe a few more) from our house…A beautiful Lake. That day was glorious with the leaves at their peak.

IMG_2114

Back home..to the front porch..Really wishing Spring to come early, so I hurried it along by placing
some flowers in my vintage wagon..

IMG_2115

IMG_2120

A hanging window box with a great backdrop for the ivy to climb. It has 2 hooks on the bottom of the tray, so
I hung 2 small lanterns from them and inserted tea lights..

IMG_2117

If you read my previous post, you will notice the “birdie bath” in the corner that was once in our bathroom.

IMG_2107

Instead of potted plants, I placed lichen balls on each holder of this plant stand.

IMG_2108

IMG_2110

Try to use natural looking items rather than the “usual” candles, etc.

IMG_2111

IMG_2109

I love using moss covered balls in various vignettes and holders.

IMG_2121

Some cut twig balls and lichen balls..they were used in a hanging Christmas topiary..now they sit in a large
bowl in the vintage A&P shopping cart that is in my kitchen.

IMG_2105

And now to the “real” mother nature..an African Violet in a Lenox bowl..

IMG_2106

I use reindeer moss to hide all the “unwanteds”..

IMG_2112

And lastly, my little bit of “Florida Sunshine” to warm up a heart on a chilly N.C. day..

Hope you enjoyed my “Wild About Mother Nature”…please feel free to leave me a comment..Would love to hear
from you!

Bye, bye birdie..bath..

In my master bath, I had a bird bath planter with a glass and metal tray on the top to keep my “niceities” next to

slipper tub..I was swooning over some furniture pieces on Stacy’s (Conspicuous Style) side bar and came across

a beautiful table that I thought may work next to the tub..Turns out that the dimensions were not right, so

I looked through the Amazon site and stumbled across this cute and functional glass side table….

….and..it was definitely the right price!….$50 and with prime, no shipping…great deal!….

……………………………..So here it is………….

IMG_2099

The before..bird bath planter with a metal and glass tray on top…

IMG_2100

A much cleaner look and definitely more shelf space..

IMG_2103

The finial from Hobby Lobby, the bird dish from HomeGoods, and the plant is sitting atop a silver candle holder base.

The Romance of Old Country Roses

Many years ago, I started collecting Royal Albert Old Country Roses. I fell in love with the teacups!…

Today, they remain in my open dining room hutch, until I can gather enough items for ANOTHER collection..

…….until then….I shall continue to enjoy the “Romance of the Roses…..

So I present my Romantic Valentine’s Day tablescape…….Hope you enjoy my collection as much as I do….

IMG_2095

Set the majority of the table with the Royal Albert Old Country Roses

IMG_2077

The place setting…Royal Albert OCR..A heart dish from the D.T. Sur Table..I placed a white ceramic flower
ornament inside the napkin..Water Goblet, Waterford..

IMG_2076

So what’s a romantic setting without writing “I Love You” with lipstick on a mirror!

IMG_2086

And a kiss from cupid..Cupid from the D.T. Sur Table

IMG_2091

And candles..I found more mirrors at the D.T. emporium…for of course, one dollar..and to think I previously
purchased those at A.C. Moore for $2.99..uggh..

IMG_2094

The antique high chair in the background is always set for a tea party that my granddaughter has each time she visits…

IMG_2083

The centerpiece..A vase on an inverted bowl…Love to invert items!..Tulips from Trader Joe’s..

IMG_2097
