Antique Wood and Iron Shutters

There’s a new store in town, I said to my hubby. He replied…

“Uh, oh..am I in trouble?”….

….”Hmmmm”, I replied, “You are never in trouble (ha!)…but your wallet may be!”

So a visit to the new store after a nice dinner at a restaurant in the mall.

We walked in….and the angels sang….

But the good thing was that they sang to my hubby!….

It was love at first sight!…

DSC_3998

He loves old architectural things…he loves the true craftsmanship of them.

We were smitten…but not smitten by the price..

DSC_3995

DSC_3987

Who wouldn’t love the beautiful old hinges…the gorgeous patina.

But alas…we walked away….with my small purchase of a pillow that was on sale.

We kept thinking of those shutters…we loved them.

Who could resist the chippy wood….and scraped paint….and rusty hinges.

DSC_3997

The store associate said they came from Italy…I just imagined them on a grand Villa…

I went back to that store…they were having a sale!!

Those shutters were still there…hanging so majestically behind the beautiful large checkout stand….

I gave my purchases to the store associate (the design consultants)….I mentioned that I so loved those shutters!

DSC_3996

She said that they were on sale!!…Really????…But still with the discount, they were a bit too steep!

When I said that $$$$ was a little more than I wanted to spend….she looked a little puzzled.

DSC_3981

Apparently, the other associate thought that the price on the shutters were times 2…..

…..rather than the price including both shutters….

DSC_3994

Sing, sing, I heard the angels sing!!!! The harps were also in accompaniment….!!

And….on top of that…they were 30% off….The angelic music was all around…

So, the price of which we thought was not only cut in half, but an extra 30% off!

DSC_3986

DSC_4017

Well, let me tell you….I never whipped out my phone so fast in my life….

…..to call hubby….to tell him the news!…

He could hardly tell what I was saying, as I was talking so fast…I was so excited!

“Calm down”, he said…just buy them!

So, a “sold tag” was quickly placed on those gorgeous shutters…

DSC_4016

Here they are…proudly over the mantel….

We had them sitting the garage for months…while my hubby tried to figure out how to safely hang shutters…

…..THAT WEIGH OVER 100 POUNDS A PIECE!!!.

He is very precise kind of guy…so he set forth some plans.

DSC_4029

It took 4 men to get these shutters on the wall..my thanks to my son and neighbors…

….in helping me get to this result.

DSC_4015

So now, I am left with…Where am I going to hang the stained glass window that was previously hanging over the mantel.???

It’s that domino/snowball effect…

A new item goes up and 5 more items need to be re-arranged…and not to mention…

…..I need to find some great new accessories for the mantel!!

So, what do you think? Do you love old architectural elements as much as we do?

The End of the Summer Hydrangeas

The summer heat was brutal…

My hydrangeas were so happy in the Spring and early Summer.

Then the high temps hit….the temps of over 100 degree days.

They literally fried my beautiful hydrangeas…

At the beginning they looked like this:

DSC_2026

And now they look like this: :(

DSC_3914

I cut some of the better blooms….

DSC_3907

I picked off all the the brown, dead petals…

and much to my surprise, there were some really pretty petals underneath…

…..of beautiful muted greens, reds, purples, and blues.

DSC_3944

DSC_3955

The morning sun adds such a pretty glow to them…

DSC_3929

DSC_3932

Today, the flowers are happy…

…..as the temps are in the 60′s this morning.

60′s???…we are still in the month of August…

Not complaining at all!!

DSC_3944

DSC_3940

The morning was crisp…

and the sky was a beautiful Carolina Blue.

DSC_3928

The dining room faces East..

I love seeing the morning sun streaming through..

Waking up the house..

To a beautiful day.

Hope you are enjoying your weekend!

The Earth moved as I made my first cheesecake…

Yep, I did it.

If you know me, I am intimidated by cooking dishes that I feel are best left to the experts.

The gourmet cooks, like my sister.

The cooks who have these fabulous kitchens with stoves that cost more than my first car.

You know the ones….

The stoves with the 6 burners, and a griddle, and a grill, and those huge stainless steel hoods….

…..that also cost more than my first car.

Yep, that’s my sister’s stove.

Banana Pudding Cheesecake

One day, while reading a post on making a cheesecake by Laura, at Top This Top That

…..I thought…hmmm..

My family loves everything “Banana Pudding”…

Banana Pudding Cheesecake

The Banana Pudding Cheesecake looked delicious.

So I wandered out of my comfort zone…

…..called my “gourmet cook” friend, Martha, asking to borrow a springform pan.

Banana Pudding Cheesecake

I did not have a springform pan, as recipes that called for them intimidated me….

…..there’s that “intimidated” word again.

I thought, if I was successful, then I would run, not walk, to the nearest Williams Sonoma.

Banana Pudding Cheesecake

So far, so good!

Paying careful attention to the directions…

Banana Pudding Cheesecake

Banana Pudding Cheesecake

I am documenting my step by step procedures…

…..as I am making history here.

AND…I need to show my sister and my mom,

…..that I am actually making a cheesecake!

But they probably know…as the Earth was moving.

Banana Pudding Cheesecake

Banana Pudding Cheesecake

As I poured the batter into the pan..I kept thinking and hoping…

…..THAT I DID NOT LEAVE ANYTHING OUT..truly!

DSC_2247

OK..now into the oven it goes…saying a little prayer.

I just wish that my oven had a “date screen”…as I was truly making history..:)

DSC_2248

DSC_2249

It’s done!!…

DSC_2253

I did it!!…

And to mark the occasion, my friend took a picture…

…..of the very proud me!!

get-attachment-1.aspx

I presented it to my dinner group…back in June..when the temps were 104 degrees…

…..the only request I had of my guests, was to be casual…wear shorts…!! Like me!

And in all of the excitement…I forgot to take a picture of a slice of the cheesecake!

So what did I do??? I made it again for my ladies lunch (my sewing group)….

DSC_3891

And thank you Laura, for giving me the encouragement that I could indeed make my first cheesecake!!

And if you would like to make this wonderful Banana Pudding Cheesecake…Go Here

Decorating books

You can find them in the living room…

You can even find them in the bedrooms…

And the occasional book to provide beautiful images to your guests…

…..to show them what a beautiful state you live in.

To place them with “like” things…

…..to round out the vignette of a particular theme.

…..to showcase a great book on table decor.

DSC_3839

And when there is a package at the door…

…..with my name on it….

……….it is most likely another home decor book.

When a package arrived at my door recently….

……my hubby said…”oh you ordered another book?”

I did not….

But when I opened it….I remembered….

DSC_3848

THAT I WON THIS FABULOUS BOOK FROM FRENCH COUNTRY COTTAGE!!!

“VINTAGE BY NINA”

…..with this lovely inscription.

……….but I was pleased, as I love this table.

After the arrival of the table…

…..we decided to add wainscoting to the room to match the table…

Snipits Of My Weekend…More projects..

This weekend was the first weekend in a long time that we were actually home!!!….

It has been a busy couple of weeks in this household….

DSC_3444

PicMonkey Collage

…….filled with a couple of trips to the beach…

DSC_3288

Yep, we made it to the top of the lighthouse…At Currituck Beach Lighthouse…over 250 steps…

To be able to see this:

DSC_3284

I have a bit of a fear of heights…so it was a real task to keep the camera steady!

DSC_3286

DSC_3273

And then a weekend on the ballfield….

That’s me and my friend Merry.

541770_454228131263295_2114763603_n

So this weekend…hubby began a project…not sure how long it will take…

……as the items we are hanging, have been in our garage for months!!…

I must say that it has been a chore to try to figure out a way to hang these items……

…….as they weigh over 100 pounds a piece…

DSC_3405

He is making me very nervous!!!

DSC_3406

Another project this weekend….did not take a before pic…but it was your basic “Bombay Brown”

DSC_3416

My granddaughter loves to hang out and help us with projects….

My hubby decided that they should have breakfast in the garage…where they were hard at work…

…..so he set up this impromptu breakfast table…

……….gotta give him credit for making breakfast fun…

DSC_3411

The chalkboard is another project…the bottom portion was damaged in our move…so it is in the process of being fixed

DSC_3410

Gotta love a Lenox basket in the garage!

DSC_3375

DSC_3417

So with garage doors open, we had a workday “garage breakfast picnic”….

DSC_3418

Great breakfast Pop!

DSC_3421

So here we are….on Monday morning..the room still filled with ladders and furniture scattered about the room….

DSC_3442

DSC_3441

…..until the project is completed….as it is going to “take a village” to lift those very heavy items…

……….up the ladders and onto the wall!….

Wish us luck!!!
