How I Decorate On A Budget

Would you like to know one way of how I decorate on a budget?

Other than shopping my house and looking for bargains everywhere I go,

attending estate sales, and scouring bargains at favorite antique shops,

one of my favorite go to places that I love to frequent are

consignment shops . . . and one in particular.

Consignment Shop-Housepitality Designs

This particular consignment shop juries everything  on which they take in to consign.

The quality of each item in the shop is truly amazing.

This shop is rather large … just a part of the shop is shown above.

It has everything from furniture, lamps, rugs, drapery, lighting, artwork

lots of accessories .. and more.

The items are from antique, vintage, and very slightly used.

You will see higher end brands such as Ethan Allen, Chelsea House, Craftique,

Lexington, and more.

I was shopping with my friend Sherri and she bought something that is on

the table above.

Here she is perusing a leather bound book in that gorgeous chinoiserie breakfront.

This was just one of several dining room sets that had “sold” tags on it.

The owner said that sometimes as soon as some furniture hits the floor it is sold.

Very pretty antique chair …. Bamboo and cane … pegs were used vs. screws.

Sherri was on the lookout for artwork for her guest room,

this Monet ‘esque painting was in the running.

Oh, that’s me in the mirror …. mirror, mirror on the wall …. 🙂

There is always a great variety of styles in this shop.

Such as this antique church pew … beautiful quilts and textiles, the list goes on.

This amazing Empire style secretary sold within hours of being placed on the floor.

I often wonder with some of these pieces that they are dealers

snagging fabulous pieces for re-sale.

Lots of different styles … from this Mission style buffet,

(more great pieces of Mission style were in the shop)

to this beautiful Chinoiserie table by Chelsea House.

I love this demilune table….the top is inlaid wood

and if I remember correctly, it was just a little over $100.

You cannot get this quality for the price at HomeGoods!

Here is a great Renoit. This painting is from the Ethan Allen gallery.

Beautifully framed and a great price at just a little over $100.

I bought a few things that day and went back the next day,  after some contemplation

of where  I would place those items that I was debating about.   Luckily they were still there!

And I spy some things looking at these photos and say to myself, I did not notice that.

I may have to make another trip back this week!

I will be showing you the great things and deals we got at this shop.

There was a lot of the Domino Effect going on in this house this past weekend.

Stay tuned and have a beautiful day!!!    We will be enjoying some milder temps this week! 🙂

  2. What I like about that shop is they actually style the hutches, cabinets, and tables, etc. The ones I have used just pile stuff all over the place and it is even hard to walk through. The price for that painting is really low compared to what they ask at the shops here. Can’t wait to see your pieces and that wonderful domino effect.

  8. Shirley, this looks like a beautiful place to shop. I spied several thing that I would love to have. I spent Friday browsing my favorite consignment and antique shops. It is so much fun, and it amazing the pieces that people no longer want. I hope you enjoy your day, and I can’t wait to see your new finds!

  9. That shop puts our little consignment shop to shame! What a selection….and so beautifully styled! Curious to see what all you bought…and where you put it! 😉

  10. Oh how I would love that chinoserie hutch!!!!! I am drooling here! The cane chair, the tables oh what a wonderful shop! We have 1 consignment shop nearby and they do not have nice, quality pieces. I is more like a garage sale:( I think I will look online for more consignment shops. Did you watch the Super Bowl? 12. Great post Shirley…cant wait to see your finds! I frequent many consignment shops in central VA and the Williamsburg area and have found some great deals especially in this past month alone. All of the consignment shops I go to are very selective about their merchandise and they stage it beautifully such as the shop you featured in your post.

I love going to different shops when we are traveling so I will have to check this shop out when I am in your area.

  13. Many lovely items. We don’t have any consignment shops in our area with this quality. Too bad, mostly junk.

  18. I would love to shop in that store! I can’t wait to see what you purchased. That secretary reminds me of some of the pieces my parents had that were handmade in cherry in Campbellsville, Kentucky in the 50’s. I let my niece have the dining room set because she has a beautiful house built in the 1800’s and those pieces were perfect for that room.

  19. Hi Shirley, This shop is awesome and you can see from the photos, high quality and well planned and displayed. I shop these consignment stores too and there are several nice ones here. In fact I recently sold a Lazy Boy reclining love seat. It was such a huge help, they even came and picked up my sofa after they juried it. Love your shop. What did you purchase? Have a great week. xo

Shirley, this shop carries terrific items–wow! The shops where we live carry mostly 17th. and 18th. century EXPENSIVE antiques or high-end names like Henkel Harris–and even used they are very costly. So wish we had shops like yours. I will have to visit your shops next time we visit our son and dil in NC. Williamsburg, VA has a shop like yours called The Velvet Shoestring. They opened a second one here in SE PA, about 30 minutes from me–I guess I’ll just have to go see what they have(tee-hee!). Enjoyed looking at all the goodies–thanks for the tour. Also, can you buy online from any of your local shops? Hugs!

  27. What a beautiful consignment shop!! We have quite a few in our area, but none as nice as yours!

  28. That is a lovely shops… They sure place everything in such taste… Wish I had more room to do some makeovers around the house…

  30. This store reminds me of a clothing consignment shop I’ve used…when you walk in you feel like you are in a ‘regular’ clothing boutique, because everything is styled so nicely.

I always say, it’s easy to decorate by walking into Ethan Allen with a few thousand bucks in your wallet, but it takes imagination and creativity to do it on a budget, qualities you have in spades.

It’s been way too long since I’ve stopped by Shirley. My apologies. We are now in florida, checking out possible properties and heading to N.C. in a few weeks. Internet has been iffy at best, but I’ll try to catch up soon.

I found a pair of white cotton crochet twin bed covers with matching shams that will be perfect for a future guest room makeover project and the price was really good too!
