If you have been reading my most recent posts, you probably know,
that I am with my mom in Georgia while my brother and sister-in-law are away.
We are having a great time. I am one that cannot sit still,
so with my sister-in-law’s blessing, I have been busy with the lower porch,
which is adjacent to my mother’s bedroom. A bedroom that I may add is
so much larger than mine. A real retreat.
MY MOM’S PORCH MAKEOVER
This house has two porches … an upper and lower …. one above the other.
My sister-in-law has been so busy with her own garden and creating one for my mom.
If you missed it, you can click on the highlighted words of my mom’s Japanese Garden.
Back to the porch …. here are some photos of the before.
We all have places in our home that are put aside when we are so busy with other priorities.
Before I started to makeover the porch, I asked my sister-in-law what pieces
of furniture were to stay on the porch. The hammock and swing were requested to stay.
Then, I asked my mom where she would like to spend most of her time in the porch.
She stated that she loves to sit in the sun on the flagstone patio area
and look at her garden. Your wish is my command Mom!
I wanted to create a little sitting area where someone else can sit
with Mom and enjoy the garden and surroundings and hear the birds sing
and also the church bells and music.
You are probably thinking …..church bells and music?
Yes, that is what I said. There is a beautiful church that is just blocks away
within the subdivision. The bells chime on the hour and then in intervals
throughout the day, there are chimes and lovely, lovely music.
The flagstone area is new. The carpeting in the porch was on the entire floor.
Because the rain sometimes blows in threw the screens, it was decided to
put in another type of flooring near the screens. Their choice was flagstone and there are
also beautiful flagstone walkways that lead to the porch.
The wicker table was previously against the wall to the left of the fireplace.
I drew it into the flagstone area between the two chairs to use for a place to
set a beverage on, some pretties that my mom wanted on the table
and to create a delineation between the two areas of the porch.
The things that my mom definitely wanted on the table were her favorite flower
of Spring, tulips and the birdhouse that my sister-in-law made for her.
There was a large birdcage at the foot of the hammock.
I relocated it to the other side and angled it in the corner.
The swing remains in this corner of the porch.
Just a little tweaking and shopping the house for pillows was all that was needed.
I pulled the round bamboo table into the area to use as a coffee table
and staged it with what my mom wanted to have on the table.
Everything in the porch were things that were already there,
and some items brought in from other areas of the house.
I did buy some new chair cushions for the wicker chairs.
Again, Mom approved. But I must say, that she is easily pleased.
Just happy to be alive!
With the hammock (which many enjoy) being across the fireplace,
there is no room for a typical seating area in front of the fireplace.
However, in this area, it is all about how this porch is used and enjoyed.
This is a double sided fireplace and the other side is my mom’s room.
Yes, a fireplace in her bedroom!
As you can see the walls are cedar shake and the ceiling are planked
with beautiful stained pine board.
After I took most of the photos, I asked my mom to come out and sit
and let me take a photo of her. She said she was on a roll with altering
the pants that my sister had recently gifted to her and she wanted to get
them all done and ready before she came for a visit this weekend. She was on a roll!
So I took a photo of her determined to finish her task in her little
sewing corner of her room. The large bank of windows in her room also overlook her garden.
I have the go-ahead to refresh another porch area of the house….I cannot sit still! So stay tuned!
Have a most beautiful day …. Mom and I definitely are!
