Housepitality Designs

it's all about the hospitable home

March 4, 2015 By Shirley

The Guest Room Is HomeGoods Happy

The guest room has been going through a transformation for a while.

Shopping and planning . . . planning and shopping.

I get an idea, then I change my mind.

However, I knew exactly what I wanted to do, in decorating the hutch.

It was just a matter of finding the right items. . . and I did.

Cue the HomeGoods Happy Song!

Guest Room Hutch-Housepitality Designs

Guest Room Hutch-Housepitality Designs

I was on the hunt for blue and white pieces to place in the NQV (Not Quite Vintage) hutch

that I painted. . . .as the background was white and needed bolder colors that would stand out.

I previously purchased the Drexel Heritage Blue and White ceramic lamp at HomeGoods.

Country French Hutch-Housepitality Designs

I went to a couple of import type stores looking for blue and white ceramic pieces.

You would have thought that those were the places to go; however, I did not find anything.

Ralph Lauren Ginger Jar-Housepitality Designs

So across the street I went . . . ran into HomeGoods and I heard the angels sing.

Cue the choir. They had a collection of Ralph Lauren ceramic kitchen items in blue and white.

Guest Room Hutch/Blue and white ceramic-Housepitality Designs

This piece is actually a canister. Looking good behind the metal grate door front.

The plates are by Johnson Brothers . . . also from HomeGoods.

Johnson Brothers covered dish-Housepitality Designs

I also found this cutie of a covered dish by Johnson Brothers, and yes, at HomeGoods.

I guess I now officially have a blue and white ceramic theme going on in the room.

Ralph Lauren Pitcher/plate-Housepitality Designs

Who couldn’t resist getting this great pitcher in the same Ralph Lauren pattern

and the coordinating plate. I love this plate; however, I could only find one out of the three

HomeGoods stores that I went to that day.

Really love the colors and hope to find more eventually.

Vintage book-Housepitality Designs

Brought the vintage book of Japan to the table to add some added color and texture.

Japanese lidded teacup-Housepitality Designs

I then remembered that I have a tea set that I purchased in Japan when I traveled there many years

ago with my mom and brother. Added a little bit of sentiment to the table.

Ralph Lauren Ceramic Blue and White Collection-Housepitalty Designs

Even though I am in the process of making over this room, some of the new things that I placed in

the room has since been alleviated . . . tossed to the curb when I find something better when

shopping the house.

Japanese Postcards-Housepitality Designs

I had forgotten about these postcards that I purchased at a post office in Japan. These postcards are

so colorful and I loved the artwork. They were commemorative cards depicting a celebration.

It was a great souvenir, let alone an inexpensive one! This was hanging in a powder room in a former

house and the mat and frame coordinated with the wallpaper.

Now, about 17 years later, it is the perfect colors and theme for this room.

Guest Room Vintage Hutch-Housepitality Designs

There is still more to do in this room before I call it complete, but then again, no room is completely

done. I still have more do to on this hutch . . . new hardware, more painting and distressing.

I just met with my friend Linda to have her do some trim work on the drapes and to recover a chair

seat and the list goes on.

Sometimes I wish I had a magic wand and I could wave it around the room and everything would be done,

but I would have missed the process, the thrill of the hunt, the fun of decorating . . .

I would have missed the dance!

Have a wonderful day everyone!

You found so many beautiful treasures! I LOVE the blue and white plate with butterflies and flowers. What a find! I’m on the hunt for blue pieces too. What is the color of the walls in that room? I’m getting ready to paint our bedroom. Is that a gray-blue? I’m always inspired by your blog. Thank you.

The blue is a beautiful pop of color against the white, great choice. And the wire mesh in the doors is another great detail. It all looks perfect now.

I LOOOOVE the blue and white pieces!! I have been stalking HG also for blue and white pieces. That was so smart it use kitchen pieces!!! You clever girl, you!! The hutch is fabulous in there, that is a neat idea to have it in a guest room! I love the things you have from Japan. I have 2 friends who got transferred to Japan and lived there for 2 years. They used to say it was a good thing I was afraid to fly or I would have gone BROKE buying things:):) Have a great day, Shirley.

Shirley….of course I love your blue and white! Makes me happy. And that canister….oh oh, I want one. Oh how I wish I lived near a Home Goods! I found six RL salad plates with just blue at TJs but they only had six. They had the floral like yours…but I am searching for more of the just plain blue and white. Yes…the thrill of the hunt, and the process…fun!
    Love your hutch too!

Very pretty. I especially like that plate. I have added just a touch of blue in my spring pillows. I think I overdid it in the 90s! I can’t wait to see your finished project. It would not be nearly as rewarding if decorating wasn’t a process. Enjoy the hunt!

    Shirley,
I always love blue and white together…its a timeless classic that never goes out of style and no one does it better than Ralph Lauren. Love the way you blended all your new and old treasures together.

Although we have a HomeGoods store nearby, I always love going into other HG’s stores when we travel. Recently, I found a great reproduction seltzer bottle at HomeGoods and it blends perfect with my vintage seltzer bottles which have become rather pricey.

I love all the blue and white dishes. I got my friend one of the Ralph Loren pitchers for Christmas as she has quite a collect of the blue and white vases.
Every time I get rid of something that does go, I regret it, because just as sure as I do, I could have used it in the new decor. Oh well such is life.
I really like the room, can I put my reservation in now? LOL

Great job Shirley and you do a terrific of hunting what you need.
Have a gret weekend coming up and hopefully the weather will be nice and warm.

What a great hutch, Shirley! I love the doors. Your blue and white collection looks great against the white of the hutch. You found some great pieces, too. I don’t know if you have Kroger by you, but they have blue and white willow dishes that I always see on display when I am in there doing my food shopping.

You would miss the dance, and we would miss your posts! ‘It’s all about the posts, ’bout the posts, no kidding’.

I was in HG today and did some damage too. It’s always interesting to see the differences in their stores depending on location…not so great neighborhood = not so great HG. You’re right about thinking the blue and white items would be in an import type of store. Surprised you didn’t find anything, but heck, you did really, really well at HG!

The postcard souvenir is such a fabulous memento of your trip, not to mention an interesting decorative piece. That’s a win-win in my book. πŸ™‚

You have done a beautiful job on your hutch. What kind of paint did you use? Love your blue and white Ralph Lauren items. I have a pillow that matches it! I got it at TJMaxx about a year ago. Would love to find another one. I also have a matching lamp, it is a large one. I love Ralph Lauren!
