A Summer Vignette Featuring Vintage Japanese Fishing Floats

When my mom traveled to Alaska to visit my niece who lived there for a short time,

she bought some vintage Japanese fishing floats that she remembered as a child in Japan.

She carefully packed them all in her suitcase and gifted them to me and my sisters.

That was many years ago, when these floats were not as popular.

I treasure these glass floats and use them in my decor all year round.

Summer Vignette-Housepitality Designs

In creating my summer vignette on the great room table

I wanted to incorporate as many elements/designs as possible.

Summer Vignette-Housepitality Designs

I had added some faux succulents for added texture and color.

Ironstone Vegetable Dish-Housepitality Designs

The ironstone vegetable bowl with the floats were previously in the guest room.

I felt it was a great start for the vignette.

Summer Vignette-Housepitality Designs

Adding the demi john to the vignette seemed like the most logical thing to add

as it goes so well with the fishing floats.

I also needed something that was “new” to add to the vignette.

And another texture.

Summer Vignette-Housepitality Designs

So I added this wicker based hurricane

and filled it with sea glass and a candle.

Summer Vignette-Housepitality Designs

I purchased this hurricane when I went to the French Laundry Home shop last week.

Summer Vignette-Housepitality Designs

This summer I have really been  using many ivy plants in my home.

Just love the way it flows out of the container and trails on the table.

Another texture.

Summer Vignette-Housepitality Designs

In keeping with adding blues to the summer decor,

I added my vintage blue and white transferware bowl with the ivy.

Jewelry Chest with sea shells-Housepitality Designs

And we can’t have summer decor without a little bit of shells and coral. . .

placed in the wooden jewelry chest on the hearth.

Hope you enjoyed the summer vignette in the great room.

Hi Shirley, I love that your mom brought those floats back to you as a memory of her own. Blenko has made those glass floats as “end of day” type remnants, if you will, for many years. Any time any of our dealers bring them into the antique mall, they get scooped up – often by other dealers. 🙂 I love the look, and yours look great with your mix of textures and other items. Those sea colors just sing to me. I hope you have a great week in store.

Love those floats and how nice to get them free from your mom. They are so pricey these days in the antique malls and on ebay. Love the new hurricane from FLH filled with the pretty sea glass. A pretty summer vignette.

Looks perfect Shirley! I also love the new hurricane you scored. I still need to find me some demi-johns and at a good price. I can’t seem to find any that are not too pricey here.

Love your new hurricane lantern. I also loved the story of your mom bringing the Japanese floats back in her suitcase. Went to my class reunion this past week and heading to Holden Beach for our family visit. Hope you are having a good summer.

Shirley, your Summer vignette is lovely! I adore the glass fishing floats and know they are a treasure since your mom gifted them to you! Your glass demi john is the perfect color to highlight your floats and ironstone. The contrasts of the lighter shells in your jewelry box is lovely on your hearth! Great job!
