Housepitality Designs

it's all about the hospitable home

January 20, 2016 By Shirley

Organizing and Refreshing the Dining Room

Organizing and refreshing the dining room was on my list

of small projects after the Christmas decorations were taken away.

I have been on the lookout for some storage items for this room too.

The dining room for the winter is also acting as a mini greenhouse

for plants that are waiting to be brought back out on the porch in the Spring.

The majority of the house gets great sunlight throughout the day; however,

the sitting area of the dining room is really conducive to making plants very happy.

The orchid in the sitting area was a gift from my sister last year

for my birthday…it has been blooming for a year. Definitely in its happy place.

The blue and white covered jars are back on the table

along with a blue and white bowl of preserved boxwood.

A new vignette created for the top of the hutch.

I relocated the tole candle sconces that were above the brackets to the great room

and replaced them with these small paintings of Paris scenes.

The ironstone in the hutch underwent a bit of re-arranging.

There are some new items added for storage.

Did you notice the new additions?

Yes, the baskets on the bottom shelf. I found the perfect sizes at Pottery Barn.

And it was also a great thing that I had several PB birthday gift cards.

The open baskets are already filled with placemats, tablecloths, and napkins.

The lidded basket in the middle hold an array of candlesticks.

Another room refreshed after being filled with Christmas decor.

Now on to the next room that needs a bit more organizing!

Have a most beautiful day . . . It will be a colder day for us

and there is even some talk about some light snowfall.

I hope the key word is “light”!

Amazing that you found the perfect sized baskets!! I keep searching for a place that is convenient to store placemats! I may have to hit PB and see if I can find a basket and use it decoratively somewhere. Love your BIG dining room. Have a beautiful day. I am off to bowling now:)

Love greenery in the house this time of year. Praying our nursery will get the spider plants in earlier this spring. Could not find them this past year until late! Love the architectural pieces on the wall. Very unique.

I like your changes, Shirley. And, your spider plant is amazing!

The painter just left a few minutes ago. He was here seven days painting our family room and a piece of furniture. He is a great painter, we have been using him for years. But, Whew! I am so glad he is finished. Now, I have to wait a week for the paint to set up before I can get everything back together. I am so ready.

I love the yellow that you use in your home and your dining room looks so good with the perfect touch of blue accessories. I also love the ironstone collection displayed in your hutch and the new baskets are perfect. Maybe I’ll add some baskets in my dining room.

Ooh, I’m gonna steal another one of your ideas! I just need to find some baskets to fit up under my little sideboard in the dining room! (I found it at Hobby Lobby, of all places. It has 3 drawers and a large space under it similar to your hutch. I better get my measuring tape…Thanks!

I give you an A+ for tweaking and always ending up with things looking just right. You have given the dining room a breath of fresh air that brightens and warms winter. BTW, are you getting some of the snow that is coming down?

I love your light-filled dining room Shirley! Your PB basket storage solution is handsome and ideal for your linens and accessories! I’m hoping they’re wrong in the forecast about the freezing rain headed our way before our snow “event”. We’re one of only three houses here and the last to have power back on if the lines go down. Stay warm ๐Ÿ™‚
