it's all about the hospitable home

The Sunroom, A Cheery Place in the Winter

I can honestly say that the sunroom helps ward off any possible winter blues.

Even when the sky is gray, this room always sends out a message of cheerfulness.

I previously had some mini daffodils on the blanket chest; however,

they grew so tall that I had to relocate them.

Pretty yellow Kalanchoes have taken their place.

Antique Blanket Chest/Grain Sack - Housepitality Designs

A vintage monogrammed grain sack that I found in France

is draped over the antique blanket chest for softness and a bit of color and texture.

Vintage seed packets under a cloche,

reminds me of pretty flowers to come in the Spring.

I went to the grocery store in preparation for the Winter storm headed our way.

One of the stores that I went to was Trader Joe’s.

I went there with one thing in mind. To get fresh flowers for the house,

so that when I see gray outdoors the flowers turn the skies to blue.

I love plants in my home . . . . bringing the outdoors in.

However, the house is like a mini greenhouse during the winter.

Oh I dream of having a greenhouse one day. A small one will do.

Sunroom/Pie Safe - Housepitality Designs

Vintage watering cans and a garden gate dress the top of the pie safe.

A hurricane with a bottle brush tree and salt glazed bunny

is my little touch of winter in the room.

In the background is a lamp that was originally in the great room.

that was replaced with an iron scroll lamp.

When the Christmas pillows were put away until next year,

these pillows made their return to the sunroom.

While I was refreshing this room, my thoughts turned to the possibility

of re-arranging the furniture in this room.

So when I am sequestered in this house this weekend due to Winter Storm Jonas

I will be experimenting with the furniture placement in this room.

So if you have any furniture placement suggestions, I am all ears!

Have a great weekend and stay safe and warm!!

I stocked up on flowers at Trader Joe’s too in preparation for my snow-in! At least I’ll have them and my hot chocolate to make me happy! Stay warm Shirley

That is such a nice sunny space for your plants. I know they are very happy and look so healthy. Have fun trying a new arrangement. I tried that in the great room and nope had to put it back. Just didn’t look right at all. Stay warm and I hope y’all keep your power. Lots of outages around here already due to strong winds taking the weak trees down with all this rain. We should see ice and snow later and I sure hope we keep our power on. They just showed Asheville’s snow on the news. So pretty!

Shirley, I think this is my favorite room of your house! It’s so nice and bright and looks so inviting (not that the rest of your house isn’t!). I’d love to bring some of my plants inside but between the cats and dogs, I don’t think they’d look good very long. Ha. I do love my little greenhouse Bruce built for me.
Your pillow fabric is still one of my favorites too. Perfect for your lovely sunroom.
Uh, y’all name your Winter storms? Cute. Or maybe scary. They are even talking about it down here. Hope y’all don’t get too awful of weather!

Shirley, your sunroom has always been on of my favorite rooms in your home. It’s so bright and cheerful! Your flowers and plants are such a lovely addition to your space. I know they must be very happy her with all the light. The blanket chest looks fabulous holding your dough bowl and ironstone. Even with the winter weather coming your sunroom reminds us that spring is around the corner. Have a wonderful weekend!

I do believe that this is the first time I’ve ever seen your pie safe! It’s beautiful! The idea of putting the seed packets in your cloche was a great idea too:) I love it all…and I love the room just how it is. I wouldn’t know what to move- it all looks perfectly placed!

Shirley, your sunroom is a breath of fresh air every time I see it! The pie safe reminds me of mine that I sold many years ago and wished I hadn’t! Stay warm and enjoy your winter weather! Possible snow for us tonight!

What a wonderful spot in your home to relax and absorb some good light! I’m always experimenting with my furniture layouts. I’d probably give a try with the love seat angled on a corner. I like your pie tin! I hope the weather won’t be too harsh. Fingers crossed for you- enjoy your indoor time!

Thanks Liz….years ago I had the love seat angled in the corner where the potting bench is now…then moved it around and it has stayed like this for well over 8 years!….

Hi, I can’t imagine the room being any prettier. Its so lovely in every way. I’m one of those chicks that re-arranges rooms OFTEN, esp. in winter it seems. I like placing pieces at an angle in the corners. I think a grouping of plants would be nice under the mirror w/the birdcage. Guess i’m big on doing the UN-expected esp. when its the first thing you will see when you enter the area. BUT, again, the room is wonderful just as is for sure. You have a great eye for decorating. I may change some things in my sun room today………….hehe. Beautiful blog. Regards.

Ready for a laugh? When you mentioned bottlebrush tree I kept scrolling through the photos looking for one! We have real life trees here called bottle brush trees and since you have so many pretty, real plants, that was what I was looking for! I need to read more carefully! Your sunroom is so cheery. Hope your weather wasn’t too bad!

So, I cheated and read the blue and white pillow post first, and I do really prefer those colors in the sunroom. Great job! So jealous of your proximity to Trader Joe’s; I’m hoping to get up there again soon to restock!
