it's all about the hospitable home

Decorating A Porch For Winter

Decorating a porch for winter after the Holiday season can be a challenge.

This particular porch, out of the three that I have,

is definitely used and viewed from the house the most.

So it is important to me that it stay bright and cheery on those dreary winter days.

When the weather is milder, I start my day off with coffee in hand

watching the sunrise.

During the winter months, the sunrises are spectacular.

I have to sometimes watch it from other side of the french door. The warmer side!

The inspiration piece for the decor of the porch

were these beautiful pillows with the knotted rope design.

They are from Grandinroad and were a Christmas gift from my brother and sister-in-law

and of course I had to have them monogrammed!

There will always be blue and white in the color scheme due to this

outdoor rug that I purchased from Frontgate.

The rugs that I waited almost 9 months to arrive due to a backorder, but worth the wait.

I added the pillows of apple green and white

as I love the color combination of blue and white with pops of green.

I am always on the lookout for blue and white pieces

and I spotted this beauty at HomeGoods the other day.

Perfect for the porch as it goes so well with the rug.

I love plants; however, during the winter months

it is difficult to maintain the houseplants out there when temps fall below freezing.

I use either evergreens or faux greenery like the boxwoods in the flower pots.

Tea Cart/Mirror - Housepitality Designs

I must say that I love the mirror on the tea cart

that reflects the Carolina Blue sky.

You can also see the reflection of the sky in the window.

I do have one “houseplant” on the coffee table.

When the temperatures drop to below freezing, it is brought indoors.

Everything else can remain outdoors.

I am happy that the upper porch is ready and waiting

for the milder days of winter.

To have a pretty view of the porch from all rooms

of the main floor in the house is a plus!

A breath of fresh air on a cool winter’s day.

If the day is way too cold to be outdoors, I can get my fix of

blue, white and green here in the sunroom.

Have a wonderful day, spending time in a room or a place that makes you happy!

It looks so pretty dressed in blues and greens. Love the new pillows and of course they had to be monogrammed! I’m looking forward to milder mornings so I can use the deck in the mornings this year.

The blue out there is just gorgeous. Do you put indoor outdoor pillows out there? My dogs and cats will occasionally jump on the furniture on the porch ( until i bust them) and get the cushions and pillows dirty so i am akways replacing…the problem is it gets $$$$. Any suggetions?

Laura..this porch is covered and pretty much is protected from the elements…I have used both outdoor pillows and regular pillows on the porch. The pillows that are not outdoor are pillow covers so if they need to be cleaned, it is easy to zip off and hand wash…AND, for the most part I do not have to deal with lounging pets 🙂 I do have the granddog visits but he has never jumped on furniture, (well at least I have not caught him! 🙂
P.S. I have washed inexpensive outdoor pillows from the Home Improvement stores by tossing them in the front loader and they have washed beautifully!…

Very pretty – I’d love an enclosed porch for our long winter months.

Not sure why someone’s post is teamed with mine. Must be a glitch. And it should read The Silos.

I absolutely love your porch, Shirley!

I’ve been yearning to have morning coffee on our deck. Needs to be just a tad bit warmer.

Shirley I so wish our days were getting warmer here. We still have snow on the ground. I am envious of you using your stunning porch right now. I agree the rug was worth the wait.

Wow, so pretty! My problem is during the Winter months my front porch is like a wind tunnel. My rocking chair was blown off the porch a few days ago! We’re talking a big real wood rocker (heavy)and it just blew it right off the side of the porch! The plus side is when the weather is hot, we’ll usually get a nice cool breeze ; ) every now and then…

Your winter porch is so beautiful, Shirley! I love the blue, white and green colors. Ours is exposed to all the elements…rain, wind, humidity and pollen, so it stays rather bare! In my next house I want more protection, maybe a sunroom that can be turned into a screened porch!

Oh Shirley, I so love your porch (all of your porches:) That plate is PERFECT with your rug! You must have done a happy dance when you saw it! I went to TJMaxx and Home Goods today and found GREAT stuff, what a good shopping day I had! Thanks for sharing your BEAUTIFUL porch. It is way too cold for me to do anything outside here:( Oh and I have that exact same planter as yours (the blue one) but mine is brown. It is an orchid pot and right now I have a candle in it! Hope you are having a beautiful Sunday!!!

Your porch is lovely and what a great place to watch the sun rise and have a great cup of coffee.
We have been having some very unusual weather here – 89 degrees today – it was a beautiful day and I so enjoyed being out on the patio.
Have a great week and I do love that rug – it was worth waiting for – everything is so pretty.
Have to close as Downton Abby is just about ready to start – so it’s off to bed to watch with my cup of sleepy time tea.

I’m sitting on my back porch right now. I know its snowing in parts of the country but we actually had a mild sunny day in south Alabama. Supposed to get down to 28 tonight but I bet it doesn’t.
Your new rug is wonderful as well as the new pillows. You are right they add so much and worth the wait for the rug.
Beautiful sunrise. I love sunrises and sunsets. Just glorious.
