Housepitality Designs

it's all about the hospitable home

July 27, 2016 By Shirley

Imitation . . . The Sincerest Form of Flattery

I think it was George Bernard Shaw that said,

“Imitation is not just the sincerest form of flattery,

it is the sincerest form of learning.”

And that is what I did today . . . learn . . . from some of the best.

I did it again . . . I took a magazine cover and I tweaked it for a summer vignette.

Summer Vignette - Housepitality Designs

I was in love with this cover of the Cottage Journal

as soon as I pulled the issue out of my mailbox.

Summer Vignette/Cottage Journal - Housepitality Designs

I did a similar “copy kat” with another magazine cover here.

Being that I so loved this cover,

I decided that it was time to use another magazine cover for inspiration.

Summer Vignette - Housepitality Designs

It has been so very warm, no, it’s very hot here. My hydrangeas are suffering,

so I try and clip some every day before the heat gets to them.

Summer Vignette/Hydrangeas - Housepitality Designs

Instead of using oranges as they did on the cover,

I used one of my favorite fruits of the summer, peaches.

Summer Vignette - Housepitality Designs

Smaller blue vintage bottles used rather than the large ones on the cover.

Summer Vignette - Housepitality Designs

I am enjoying doing these “copy kat” vignettes.

Even though you may not have all of the exact items that the magazine cover displays,

it is fun to tweak it a bit using what you have on hand to obtain the same effect.

Summer Vignette - Housepitality Designs

When I was photographing this summer vignette,

I had a little buddy that I had to work around . . . he was definitely at my feet sleeping.

I did not want to wake him to move . . . He is an old man (14 years old) and needs his sleep!

I am granddog sitting this week. Talk about the Dog Days of Summer!

Giguere - Housepitality Designs

Seems like most of the country is being affected by this heat wave.

Hope you are staying cool!

Have a wonderful summer day!

Love your version of the vignette and awe, he’s so cute sleeping. Yes, don’t wake him. I need to find that magazine.

Your version is so pretty! The peaches make this vignette so refreshing. Your Granddog is adorable. I agree it’s best to stay inside and stay cool. The heat and humidity here is stifling.

What a wonderful way to showcase your beautiful hydrangeas! And thank you for reminding me of being a copycat! I forgot about using magazine covers for inspiration. Your vignette looks wonderful. Love the lavender bundle you added. We’re hot too, although we did get some rain which brought our temps to the low 90’s. Stay cool!

So pretty Shirley! I love that magazine!
Thanks for the reminder that I need to add some acidity to my blue hydrangeas. They are turning white.

I actually like your version better! It is definitely magazine worthy!!! I am off to Lancaster area, don’t think I will see Yvonne though this trip. It is HOT here too, don’t even feel like sitting by the pool so off I go:) Stay cool, Shirley. XO

Shirley, your vignette looks absolutely beautiful! I love it when you can shop your house and create a new look. I know what you mean about the heat being hard on our flowers. We also have horrible winds here so it is like being in a convection oven on a 100 degree day. We redid our front flower beds this spring so we are having to water like crazy! Stay cool, and I hope that you have a wonderful day!

I love your interpretation of the magazine cover on your coffee table! Your hydrangeas are still beautiful with their softer, muted shades…ours are crispy in this heat! Your granddog has the right idea, sleeping in the a/c 🙂

Great vignette. I loved the Cottage cover also. My hydrangeas were so burned that I didn’t even get one flower to bring in. We have one month of HOT JULY. I hate to see my A/C bill . I am looking forward to fall, it can’t get here soon enough for me.

I got to see my little grand dog when I went up to Shaun’s for my Bday last week. Kelly is grewing up so fast. She will be 14 in October. Really had a wonderful time, but always glad to come home.

    Have a cooler week.
