I think it was George Bernard Shaw that said,
“Imitation is not just the sincerest form of flattery,
it is the sincerest form of learning.”
And that is what I did today . . . learn . . . from some of the best.
I did it again . . . I took a magazine cover and I tweaked it for a summer vignette.
I was in love with this cover of the Cottage Journal
as soon as I pulled the issue out of my mailbox.
I did a similar “copy kat” with another magazine cover here.
Being that I so loved this cover,
I decided that it was time to use another magazine cover for inspiration.
It has been so very warm, no, it’s very hot here. My hydrangeas are suffering,
so I try and clip some every day before the heat gets to them.
Instead of using oranges as they did on the cover,
I used one of my favorite fruits of the summer, peaches.
Smaller blue vintage bottles used rather than the large ones on the cover.
I am enjoying doing these “copy kat” vignettes.
Even though you may not have all of the exact items that the magazine cover displays,
it is fun to tweak it a bit using what you have on hand to obtain the same effect.
When I was photographing this summer vignette,
I had a little buddy that I had to work around . . . he was definitely at my feet sleeping.
I did not want to wake him to move . . . He is an old man (14 years old) and needs his sleep!
I am granddog sitting this week. Talk about the Dog Days of Summer!
Seems like most of the country is being affected by this heat wave.
Hope you are staying cool!
Have a wonderful summer day!

Love your version of the vignette and awe, he’s so cute sleeping. Yes, don’t wake him. I need to find that magazine.
So, So pretty, Shirley. Always love me some wonderful inspiration.

Your version is so pretty! The peaches make this vignette so refreshing. Your Granddog is adorable. I agree it’s best to stay inside and stay cool. The heat and humidity here is stifling.
What a wonderful way to showcase your beautiful hydrangeas! And thank you for reminding me of being a copycat! I forgot about using magazine covers for inspiration. Your vignette looks wonderful. Love the lavender bundle you added. We’re hot too, although we did get some rain which brought our temps to the low 90’s. Stay cool!
🙂

It looks so pretty! I confess to being a copy Kat, too….
Quite frankly…your version has more personality! Love the peaches, too! 😉

So pretty Shirley! I love that magazine!
Thanks for the reminder that I need to add some acidity to my blue hydrangeas. They are turning white.
I actually like your version better! It is definitely magazine worthy!!! I am off to Lancaster area, don’t think I will see Yvonne though this trip. It is HOT here too, don’t even feel like sitting by the pool so off I go:) Stay cool, Shirley. XO
Shirley, your vignette looks absolutely beautiful! I love it when you can shop your house and create a new look. I know what you mean about the heat being hard on our flowers. We also have horrible winds here so it is like being in a convection oven on a 100 degree day. We redid our front flower beds this spring so we are having to water like crazy! Stay cool, and I hope that you have a wonderful day!
You inspire me.:)
It’s so lovely Shirley! I absolutely love that magazine too and always find so much inspiration between it’s pages…and on the front cover too of course. 😉
Loved the copy cay ideas!!
Pretty – So cooling looking – love the peach addition – Hot?? Triple digits for the last month here…but finally the rains are slowly upon us…can’t wait for Fall.
Shirley
I fell in love with this magazine cover too! I absolutely adore your interpretation of it! The rich color of the peaches along with the deep blue of the hydrangeas is truly magical. Just beautiful!
Nice job Shirley!! I love that cover too and you’ve captured it while making it your own – great work!
Beautiful! I am trying really hard not to be covetous,Shirley. Why must you make it so hard? ? I love yours even better!
Great job Shirley. It has been HOT, HOT, HOT! Our two us usually love it outside. They have no interest, it is way too hot.
Cindy
It turned out lovely. I love the peaches and the lavender.
That looks sooooo pretty, Shirley!! You get an A++++ And hello grand doggie 🙂
Stay cool,
L
What a fun idea Shirley, yours is prettier than the magazine cover! Your granddog looks very happy!
Hi Shirley, I think that your vignettes should be on the cover of a magazine. They are so lovely. Have a wonderful evening. xx Jo
Shirley, when I saw your Instagram, I couldn’t wait to see your post! I love every element…hydrangeas, peaches, lavender, etc! Just gorgeous!
While that magazine cover is lovely, I like your vignette so much better! You’ve used all the right pieces and put them together perfectly. The look really speaks of summer and is very appealing.
You have such a gorgeous home and the table setting looks even better the the magazine.
Maria
Shirley, that is one gorgeous vignette! I love it, and think you should send it in to Hoffman Media to their email!
I think yours is prettier! Truly! You should send it to them and show those mad photography skills!
Happy day rock star!
karianne
I like yours better too! The peaches look more like summer and your hydrangeas still look beautiful.
Beautiful vignette. I like yours more. Little Buddy is adorable. Long afternoon naps on hot summer days is the best.
Hugs my friend.
Kris
Beautiful and charming vignette. I do the same thing all the time. I find inspiration from all my favorite magazines. You did an excellent job recreating the look on the cover.
Gorgeous and inviting home.
Love your cute pooch.
I love your interpretation of the magazine cover on your coffee table! Your hydrangeas are still beautiful with their softer, muted shades…ours are crispy in this heat! Your granddog has the right idea, sleeping in the a/c 🙂
Beautiful styling for a fresh vignette. You have inspired my to move a few accessories around in my own home. Thanks for the inspiration.
Have a great week.
You nailed it Shirley! Love how it turned out. I need to get to Barnes & Noble for some magazines now that I have down time. The boys start school in a short three weeks and I will probably go out of my mind.
Shirley, this is so beautiful! The colors, the textures, such a great idea to do a “copycat”, and Cottage Journal is one of my favorites! Wishing you a happy weekend, I for one am secretly wishing for fall. Xo Lidy
I love that magazine, it always has such pretty pictures ! Your setting is so pretty too. Adorable Grandog , is he a Golden
Retriever ? I love Goldens, they are wonderful dogs !
Your version is beautiful! Nicely done ♥

Gorgeous Shirley! I love to imitate what I see too. ha. I think I did that with a flag arrangement of yours. 🙂 Your fur buddy looks like a sweetheart.
Great vignette. I loved the Cottage cover also. My hydrangeas were so burned that I didn’t even get one flower to bring in. We have one month of HOT JULY. I hate to see my A/C bill . I am looking forward to fall, it can’t get here soon enough for me.
I got to see my little grand dog when I went up to Shaun’s for my Bday last week. Kelly is grewing up so fast. She will be 14 in October. Really had a wonderful time, but always glad to come home.
Have a cooler week.
Mary
It is a great looking vignette. I also love the book, but I like your version of it though…
