Housepitality Designs

it's all about the hospitable home

Fall on the Back Porch

Dressing the back porch for Fall was on the agenda this past weekend.

Because you can see the upper back porch from most of the rooms in the main living area,

I needed to coordinate the colors.

I recently dressed the dining room in traditional Fall colors, which you can see HERE

and decided to go with those same colors, including the blues.

I found some neutral pumpkin pillow covers at Pottery Barn on clearance.

The perfect shades of brown for the patio furniture cushions.

I relocated the vintage screen door from the media room kitchen to the upper porch,

as a backdrop for the Singer table.

I combined all of the colors I was using on the porch

in this screen door area of the porch.

As I was styling this area for Fall,

I was actually thinking about what I can do with this area for Christmas!

Talk about not living in the moment!

Happy with this little corner of the porch. A happy place.

A vintage stool helps elevate the potted mum.

Still so very happy with the Chinoiserie outdoor carpet from Frontgate.

I recently took another trip to my favorite locally owned garden center

and purchased a few more mums. The ones I bought at the same garden center

a month ago for my Fall front porch are still going strong.

Have a large gourd or mega squash? Put a bow around it!

On the other side of the French doors is the Master Bedroom.

The opposite side is the dining room.

I love African Violets and always have them inside my home.

However, they never seemed to re-bloom. So I took my violets and placed them on the back porch.

Within a couple of weeks, they were blooming again with a vengeance!

I am assuming they love the light out there.

I also have been babying this Jade plant.

My friend JoAnn has a huge Jade plant, so I am trying to grow this one to a come close to hers,

but I need her green thumb!

So here’s to another porch decorated for Fall.

While I was decorating this porch, my hubby was at baseball practice 2 /12 hours away.

He is preparing for a Baseball (not softball) tournament soon. Looks like he may be pitching

however, he can play any base. The old guy can still play!

So the “Boys of Summer” are now moving to the “Boys of Fall” and

another ballpark where I will leave my mark on the bleachers.

Or is it that the bleachers will be leaving their mark on me!

The leaves are just starting to turn on certain trees here.

So looking forward to the colorful days of Fall.

In my former house, in another state, if you asked me if the leaves were turning yet,

I would have to say that maybe the tips of the palm fronds are turning brown. 🙂

Have a beautiful day!!!

P.S. My Book Giveaway is still going on.

The two winners of the book, “Life in Season” by Heather and Vanessa from

At the Picket Fence blog, will be announced on October 31st. There is still time to enter.

Your porch is so pretty and ready to be enjoyed to watch the leaves turn and fall. I kill jade plants and gave up long time ago. I also am not good with African Violets. They must love the weather outside right now before the cold hits.

Your porches are always beautiful. How do you keep your rug so clean outside? Do you bring them in when not using the porch? Love the rug!

Shirley, I absolutely love your idea of a bow on the gourd. I also noticed you had the bow in the potted plant then you wove it slightly to show up against the pumpkin, to make that also shine…..great porch ideas…..thanks!

Love seeing your porches always so pretty. Beautiful touches and the large gourd is something. I noticed the same pheasant pillow I have in my foyer.

Both the African violets and the jade don’t like alot of water. Yours look very healthy and happy!!! I am off to the Flower Warehouse up in Blue Ball, Pa. but had to come see what you were sharing first. I would be out here all day watching the leaves turning, while sipping something delicious:) I love your home so much. Have a beautiful day. We are supposed to have record WARMTH today….high 80’s! I like the Fall temps better. XO

Your back porch is so inviting. I never thought about putting my African violets outside in summer. I will have to remember to do that next year and see what happens.

I so admire all of you who so constantly change things up. I may tweak here and there, but for the most part things stay the same. I guess my creative outlet for change is setting tables. Travel well tomorrow.

Shirley, your back porch looks great! I still haven’t bought any additional mums and pumpkins to decorate mine. We had a few cool days; and we are back in the 90’s, with record heat! So, I guess I’ll have to wait a bit longer. In the meantime, I’ll just admire your beautiful porch!

Shirley, your porch is beautiful! And so is your jade plant! My huge one fell over and I am trying to save it! We shall see… I also love the bow on the gourd. Mums never last more than a couple of weeks for me. What is your secret to making them last longer?

Love all the combinations of colors – they work very well together. Your porches always look so pretty. Your mums are amazing – to hot for them here. We are going to have 98 tomorrow which is hard to take after a week of lovely Fall weather and we even had rain. Yea Yea Yea.

Is the flooding any where close to you. So many people lost their homes, oh so sad.

Enjoy your week and take a pillow to sit on.

What an enjoyable space. And the African Violet looks amazing. The air is a little cooler in the morning in your former state. And the crepe myrtle is shedding its leaves. Fall is coming very slowly.
