Elegance and A Little Rough Around the Edges

You probably heard the saying that opposites attract?

Like the characters in the movie, Lady and the Tramp,

or Marilyn Monroe and Joe Dimaggio.

Well what about exquisite Waterford

and a wonderful piece of vintage chippiness?

After the items of the Christmas vignette on the coffee table

were removed and stored for another year, I began to come up with another plan

for the vignette of the table to reflect the sparkle of the New Year.

When I think of the New Year, I think of New Year’s Eve in Times Square.

So I began with my Waterford 2000 Times Square Crystal Ball replica

and paired it with a pair of Waterford candlesticks.

I then gathered my other pieces from the Waterford Millennial collection

to add to the table.

However, it was too much sparkle. Even though a girl does love anything that sparkles.

So some texture was added in the boxwood and the gorgeous book,

“Segretto Vignettes”, by Leslie Sinclair.

The book that I won in a giveaway by Lidy of The French Garden House.

Thank you Lidy! The book is beyond exquisite.

There will be some inspiration coming soon from that book!

This book inspired me to seek a piece of vintage architecture

to create the idea that opposites attract. To show the beauty

of how the elegance of crystal and aged wood and paint can belong together.

I had just the piece, a piece that I found while shopping with the lovely

Linda of Lulu Musings while visiting her in Maine.

Speaking of opposites, how about placing a pinecone in a Waterford crystal votive?

Smooth shiny crystal meets the layered roughness of a pinecone.

The large Waterford Millennial crystal bowl was a special birthday gift

from my brother many years ago.

Speaking of birthdays, my birthday is in January . . .

and what better than to celebrate it with flowers

that were a birthday gift placed in a Waterford Birthday Candle vase.

If you look closely, you can see the image of the flame

near the edge of the water level.

Oh my … so many different textures and items that are quite the opposite . . .

shiny, elegant, nature’s beauty, smooth, and prickly.

So Happy Together!!!

I hope that if you were affected by the huge snow storm in the eastern part of the

country this weekend, that you are safe and sound. We got a little over 2 inches

of snowfall here. Much less than predicted. It is so pretty, but the icy roads

are the big nuisance here. We have been housebound for a couple of days.

Hopefully just one more day and we can venture out.

Have a most beautiful day. Hope you liked my version of how opposites attract!

  1. I love the juxtaposition and contrast of textures of the crystal, pinecones and wonderful architectural fragment. We got 7” of snow this weekend and it is bitter cold here this morning. Stay warm and Happy Birthday!

P.s. for some reason, the caps aren’t working as I write my comment, I even tried copying and pasting, not sure what up with that! 🙂

  2. Yes, sparkly and chippy work perfectly together. Go from extremely cold over the weekend and then it’s going to be in the seventies by the end of the week. We’re on that roller coaster ride again!

  5. Beautiful! I wanted to win that book :-(. But happy that you did! We got 8 inches of snow here and will be house bound for a few more days. No mail, newspaper, ups, or trash pickup, lol. We are rural and usually by the time they get all of the main roads cleared, the weather has warmed up and our rural snow melts, except in the shaded areas. We are suppose to be 70 degrees here by Friday.

  8. beautiful combo with the pink flowers, pinecones and your little chippy. I love it.

  9. OMGoodness, your Waterford pieces are exquisite! I have always loved Waterford but have none;( My in-laws had frieends and she had a HUGE collection of Waterford; MANY glasses, vases bowls etc. They had no children and he died first then she got Altzheimers. I often wonder what happened to her fabulous collection!!! I would have been willing to buy some pieces. I should start looking for some. It is still VERY cold here but going to 60 by Thurs!!! Can’t wait! BTW, it won’t let me do capital letters for some reason???? Have a beautiful day. I will wrap up taking Christmas down today and HAVE to get to the grocery. I also did a winter dinig room table, mantle and hearth, and the coffee table:) Sharing soon!!!!

  12. Your design is lovely with the textures and shiny.

  13. Hi Shirley- I do love the contrast of pretty things next to old items. It seems to make them even more interesting and pretty. I Love Waterford crystal. I have a few pieces by them and nothing quite sparkles like they do! We always have snow here so I just watched to see how the rest of the country was doing! It’s always pretty to see- especially the first snow!

  14. Shirley I am also a lover of contrasts. The juxtaposition of the old and new and the beauty of that corbel with the chippy paint. It makes for quite an interesting collection.
