My Mom’s Porch Makeover

If you have been reading my most recent posts, you probably know,

that I am with my mom in Georgia while my brother and sister-in-law are away.

We are having a great time. I am one that cannot sit still,

so with my sister-in-law’s blessing, I have been busy with the lower porch,

which is adjacent to my mother’s bedroom. A bedroom that I may add is

so much larger than mine. A real retreat.

This house has two porches … an upper and lower …. one above the other.

My sister-in-law has been so busy with her own garden and creating one for my mom.

If you missed it, you can click on the highlighted words of my mom’s Japanese Garden.

Back to the porch …. here are some photos of the before.

We all have places in our home that are put aside when we are so busy with other priorities.

Before I started to makeover the porch, I asked my sister-in-law what pieces

of furniture were to stay on the porch. The hammock and swing were requested to stay.

Then, I asked my mom where she would like to spend most of her time in the porch.

She stated that she loves to sit in the sun on the flagstone patio area

and look at her garden. Your wish is my command Mom!

I wanted to create a little sitting area where someone else can sit

with Mom and enjoy the garden and surroundings and hear the birds sing

and also the church bells and music.

You are probably thinking … bells and music?

Yes, that is what I said. There is a beautiful church that is just blocks away

within the subdivision. The bells chime on the hour and then in intervals

throughout the day, there are chimes and lovely, lovely music.

The flagstone area is new. The carpeting in the porch was on the entire floor.

Because the rain sometimes blows in threw the screens, it was decided to

put in another type of flooring near the screens.  Their choice was flagstone and there are

also beautiful flagstone walkways that lead to the porch.

The wicker table was previously against the wall to the left of the fireplace.

I drew it into the flagstone area between the two chairs to use  for a place to

set a beverage on, some pretties that my mom wanted on the table

and to create a delineation between the two areas of the porch.

The things that my mom definitely wanted on the table were her favorite flower

of Spring, tulips and the birdhouse that my sister-in-law made for her.

There was a large birdcage at the foot of the hammock.

I relocated it to the other side and angled it in the corner.

The swing remains in this corner of the porch.

Just a little tweaking and shopping the house for pillows was all that was needed.

I pulled the round bamboo table into the area to use as a coffee table

and staged it with what my mom wanted to have on the table.

Everything in the porch were things that were already there,

and some items brought in from other areas of the house.

I did buy some new chair cushions for the wicker chairs.

Again, Mom approved. But I must say, that she is easily pleased.

Just happy to be alive!

With the hammock (which many enjoy) being across the fireplace,

there is no room for a typical seating area in front of the fireplace.

However, in this area, it is all about how this porch is used and enjoyed.

This is a double sided fireplace and the other side is my mom’s room.

Yes, a fireplace in her bedroom!

As you can see the walls are cedar shake and the ceiling are planked

with beautiful stained pine board.

After I took most of the photos, I asked my mom to come out and sit

and let me take a photo of her. She said she was on a roll with altering

the pants that my sister had recently gifted to her and she wanted to get

them all done and ready before she came for a visit this weekend. She was on a roll!

Mom's Sewing Area-Housepitality Designs

So I took a photo of her determined to finish her task in her little

sewing corner of her room. The large bank of windows in her room also overlook her garden.

I  have the go-ahead to refresh another porch area  of the house….I cannot sit still!  So stay tuned!

Have a most beautiful day …. Mom and I definitely are!

Shirley, that room looks entirely different. It is so pretty how you put two different sitting areas in the same room. Corky’s cage looks so pretty in the corner. The sitting area on the flagstone is perfect for Mom because the afternoon sun streams into the porch through the screen, and she can see her garden and flagstone path on the other side. I am so surprised this porch could be so completely transformed. Thank you so much. I love it, Your talent is endless and your results are AMAZING.

  13. Hi Shirley, what a precious time you are spending with your Mom. My Mom is 87 and she can run circles around me. It is so marvelous just how mush they give back at this age. I just hope I can be the same way. I didn’t realize just how much you guys really use a porch where the weather is much calmer than us in the Rocky Mountains. How wonderful to be able to use it year round. Enjoy your visit!

  14. Shirley, you are my inspiration! And I see where you get your wonderfulness from–straight from your mom! 🙂

It looks like a beautiful home and situation for your mother. The porch looks very nice, especially after your tweaking! One safety consideration though, that I wonder if you’ve considered, is the glass coffee table. Glass can be difficult for children and seniors to see. (I know, because I have one myself.) Enjoy your sweet time with your mom!

  17. Shirley: Everything is so pretty and so nice. It is truly a lovely space. And, it is so wonderful that you are able to spend this time with your mom. I know you treasure the moments!

  18. I do love what you came up with! What a perfect area to enjoy the seasons and I think you chose the perfect spots for everything! Love the red wicker furniture and the swing. 19. That red wicker is so cheery and happy! I especially like the little red and white fish on the table. The swing is soooo inviting. I love the pics you’ve included of your Mom-she is so cute!
A suggestion for the glass coffee table-perhaps some small, patterned stick-ons in complementing colors that delineate the edge of the table? They could be placed on the under side of the glass top so as not peel off easily.

  20. What a special time you are having. The porch is so inviting, I bet your Mom will spend a lot of time out there.

  21. How nice that your sister-in-law let you refresh the porch for your Mom. What a beautiful space for her to sit and enjoy her garden, the chimes and birds singing. That remended me that I grew up just one block from our church so could hear the church bells all the time. I had forgotten about that. I love the red wicker! Your Mom is a worker bee, just like you!!!!!

  22. PS, the front of one of our homes was cedar shakes. That is exactly what drew me to it at the time. We did not let it “age” to the weathered gray. I liked it the beautiful color it is.

  26. A perfect infusion of color and style, not to mention the wonderful elements of stone, cedar, and pine. And how wonderful to see the resourcefulness of your dear Mother altering a pair of pants. I’m sure she has plenty, but how nice to see someone still sew and be resourceful. I will always be proud of that generation of women! Be proud of your work too. Very, nice and well done!
