Summer House

As I fluffed the Great Room for summer I could not help but think about

how I need to stage my home to get it ready to place on the market.

I certainly do not need to bring in any things, but take away . . .

take lots of things away. I love furniture and the pretties that give

a room its personality . . . mine!

In the coming month, lots of things will be stored away or donated,

but in the meantime, I will enjoy my Summer House.

The vintage settee is adorned  with the Summer House grain sack pillow by

French Laundry Home and the vintage grain sack that I use as a cushion

of which no one can sit on 🙂 . . . . . . .a treasure from my friend Martha,

which will eventually be stored away.

I purposely kept my mantel with minimal decor just placing a starfish in front

of the breadboards to add that touch of summer.

The simplicity of starfish are my go to summer accessory.

A simple touch goes a long way.

Pillows of blue and white were added to the sofa.

The checked pillow was custom made and the cute pom-pom pillow

was a great find at the Pottery Barn Outlet store. I have had that embroidered coral inspired pillow

for a few years now ….. also from Pottery Barn.

Some things will change soon . . . less pretties and  keeping with the

tones of blue and white portraying that classic feel.

A new coffee table vignette will happen soon. Thinking of a simple vase of flowers,

hopefully from my hydrangea bushes and other pretties that will not deter from

people looking at the bones of the room, like the architectural elements in the space.

When we built this home, we thought that we would only be here for 5 years or so

and then build our “right-sized” home. But then the bottom of the housing market fell out

and we decided to stay a while as we loved our neighborhood and friends here.

It is now time  to reduce our maintenance …. less cleaning of 4,500 sq feet

and less grass to mow.

So hopefully the next house,  which will be  about 15 minutes away

from this one, will be the one before we head on over to the nursing home!

Now to the winner of the giveaway of one copy of the book,

“Beautiful” by Mark D. Sikes. Drum roll please . . . . . Lidy. . . Congrats Lidy!

I wish you all a most beautiful day. I will be posting next week with

 rooms that I have staged.

  1. Love your summer house and oh, the task of preparing to sell. Have fun boxing things up.

  2. Looks beautiful as always, Shirley! The staging process is SO hard! My house didn’t feel like “us” anymore… but it was effective! Good luck with your packing and purging. xo Heidi

I’m anxious to follow the staging of your home for sale. When my husband retires in two years, we’ll be leaving PA for AR. The living spaces in my home are yellow, and my husband wants to keep them that color. I would prefer using a neutral color scheme in the main space, at least. What do you think? We have solid wood stained trim, and I read on several design blogs not to use yellow with the trim for resale. I was planning to use Benjamin Moore Grant Beige for the kitchen/dining/living areas. Are you going to keep your yellow?

  4. Your summer home looks gorgeous as it always does….in every season! I can tell you that I wish I had gone with my “gut” when staging our home and had not listened to the stager that was brought in by the realtor. But we live and learn. I would certainly removed some things but not as much as she told me to. Trust your instincts. Your home should sell very quickly as anyone would be SO lucky to have it! I wish I was closer, I am a GOOD packer!!!!! Have a beautiful weekend! The sun is FINALLY back here and temps are rising quickly!

  5. Shirley, I love the touches of summer that you have added…just perfect! Your home has great architectural features and you should have no problem with selling! Congrats to Lidy!

  6. Shirley, you have such a beautiful home! I am sure it will sell fast. I can’t wait to see how you have staged your other rooms. How exciting to be building a new home! I am so happy for you!!!

  7. Shirley, your home is gorgeous and I love the yummy paint color. I just found your blog a few days ago and have searched for a post about the paint color. Will you tell us the color, please?

  8. Your home is just beautiful. I can’t wait to see what’s next!

  9. Oh Shirley,
I love your home. I know pretties can distract…but When I look at your photos my eyes just want to take it all in.
Homes are selling so fast here in the Twin acities. We had another bidding war going on with our neighbors home. I just don’t think your home will be on the market long.

Looking forward to watching you great a new home.

  10. One of the best things we did was get a small storage unit. We had a basement at our old house, but we didn’t want it filled with boxes, so we brought things to the storage unit. The moving company didn’t take anything liquid, so that’s where we put it for the 2 weeks between closings. I thought I had cleared out a lot of things, but the realtor wanted the counters cleared of almost completely for the photos. The house really does show better because prospective homebuyers . You can see our house video here. You might have seen it before…

I am going to miss this house!! You have such a talent in decorating and I love studying all your rooms and we share the use of blue and white….and of course I still love those blue buffalo check pillows…hehe! I agree with others your house will sell fast…hope your ready! Anixious to see what you put away…as I will be needing to sell in the next few years being a widow now in a large house and getting older….
    Best wishes to you!

  12. Your Summer Home is always pretty! Looking forward to seeing you stage the house…it will sell quick, nice home. I’m excited seeing your new house build! I have been seeing really nice architecture on outside of homes instead of cookie cutter style…I love architecture. The details inside make a home so you need less furnishings also.

  13. Shirley, your house is so very beautiful! I love all your summer touches. And I’m SO excited to win this gorgeous, gorgeous book by Mark D. Sikes! I can’t wait to receive it and be inspired, thank you SO very much. I’m thrilled, I’ve never won anything before! Xo Lidy

  14. Your summer house looks so relaxing and refreshing! Congrats to Lidy for winning! It is going to be fun watching your house moving and building journey.

  15. Your house is so very nice, but I know the next one will also be very nice as well. I can’t wait to see it when it is completed. I do not envy your having to pack! I hate even packing for a short holiday! But I know you will be fine. The best to you!

  16. Just want to add from personal experiences buying and selling I actually prefer empty houses so I can see the house not the homeowners furnishings and belongings. But that was not always possible when looking at previously owned houses. As a seller I was more than happy to scale way back on my personal items and furniture. Photos for listings are different from photos for a magazine shoot. Inexperienced buyers can fall in love with the ‘total look’ without realizing it won’t look the same with their furniture. Fresh paint is good but really are any of us moving into a previously owned house and not changing the paint? Your house will sell itself quickly.

  17. Shirley we are also going to put our house on the market in the next few months. We have five bedrooms which is much too much to deal with any more. I wanted to move out of Connecticut but because of health reasons, we have to stay here but move closer to Yale. I love the way our home looks but I know I have too much stuff but I’m thinking I will get a pod and put things away for awhile when we put it on the market. Good luck to you.

Love how you brought summer into your home, and love the starfish touches, too. You should be able to sell quickly as your home is gorgeous and it’s the perfect time of year to sell. Very best wishes for all good things in your new home. I know you guys must be so excited, especially with less upkeep that will be required. I can’t wait to see your new place! Even though my hubby won’t retire for years to come, we downsized 3+ years ago and we love having more free time. It’s not our retirement home, but we didn’t want to wait until we could leave the state before downsizing. Hugs!

  19. You always have such beautiful items Shirley. Everything looks great and so summery.

When are you putting your home on the market. A house across the street from me just sold for $530,000 in 4 days. So hopefully when I put my on the market it should sell quickly. Will more than likely move up North where my son lives. Will your little sweetie still be close?

Mine graduated today with honors and three years of straight A’s. Now it’s on the high school and she made it to the Varsity cheer leading.
Have a wonderful weekend Shirley. I didn’t get an email with your post.

  20. You want to come fluff for me? I want a change or two and can’t seem to make it happen. I brought up a few pillows for a sofa from Houston, but I don’t like them so much here. Your touches are, as always, just right.

  21. Love your summer house! I’m sure some lucky buyers will snatch it up as soon as it’s listed!

  22. Judy Hubbard says

I love your house! The lovely yellow paint color, the blue and white accessories and other decor accents! But I can understand downsizing….can’t wait to see what you will do with the new house!

  23. GORGEOUS ROOM!!! This is my style exactly…love it! The pillows are absolutely gorgeous! Good luck on the new house. Can’t wait to see your decorations there too. Just found your blog and post at the wow it wed. party:)
