Using the out of the ordinary vessels for flower arrangements
can be fun! So why not place pretty flowers in something as
utilitarian as a canning jar? The juxtaposition of the elegance
of flowers and the quaint vessels of canning jars make an arrangement
much more interesting!
Hello Dear Readers!
Welcome to Monday Morning Blooms when
Lidy, Mary, Pam and I present to you some
wonderful flower inspiration for your home and garden.
The links to their beautiful posts are at the bottom of this page.
Today’s theme is “jars”, as you may have already guessed!
Often times when I reach for a jar
to create an arrangement, I choose
my vintage French canning jars.
If you would like to see some of the posts
in which I have used these jars,
they can be seen here:

French Canning Jars – Floral Friday
Today, the vignette is quite different from above
and I used hydrangeas from my yard!
When I purchased the hydrangeas
shrubs, the plant label/marker read,
“Deep Purple Hydrangea, Hortensia Deep Purple”
Hydrangea Macrophylia.(which means a big leaf hydrangea)
The actual flowers were crimson in color and
as time went by, they morphed into a beautiful purple.
I am so loving the soft green that surrounds
the petals of the hydrangea flower, that truly look velvety.
The other flowers that I used today are:
White Stock
Orange Mini Varigated Chrysanthemums
Orange Stock Roses
Bupleurum (Hare’s Ear) for filler.
These French vintage canning jars were found
in a quaint antique shop in Calistoga, California
while on a trip to Napa with my hubby several years ago.
It is also where I found my vintage French market basket
and all of these things had a great adventure/plane ride home.
I purchased a set of three canning jars,
Citron, Mandarine, and a sweet jam jar
with a great graphic.
Sweet citrus mousse treats from Trader Joe’s
fill the compote. They are delicious!
My hubby could not wait until I took off the
“do not eat this prop” note on the package.
Tea Time for two at the kitchen table.
As you can see…our breakfast area is across
from my sitting area and the sunroom.
A single hydrangea bloom fills the petite jam jar.
I am hoping that this hydrangea shrub
will will keep blooming until Fall
as it is such a wonderful Fall color.
When I place flower arrangements
in the house, the wonderful part is that
you are able to see them from every room
with the exception of the bedrooms.
We planted hydrangea shrubs last year in the Spring
after the last Spring frost. Several are starting to bloom
including my Limelight Annabelles’
The soil here is more acidic. therefore most of my blooms
are blue in color…even though the shrub may have been
planted with pink blooms, the next year, the blooms are blue.
If you want pink blooms, you have to add more lime to the soil.
We amend our soil with a mixture of organic garden soil,
peat moss, and Black Cow….an even amount of each.
Prior to planting our hydrangeas, we took note of the
direction of the sun…as hydrangeas love morning sun
and afternoon shade.
Hope you enjoyed my vintage French canning jars vignette
in the breakfast room today.
Now it is time to see the loveliness of my Blooms friends
floral jar inspiration!

and flower inspiration!

Beautiful Shirley! I have vintage French canning jar envy every time I see your jars! Aren’t you lovin’ having a hydrangea to cut again in your yard? I have a big leaf hydrangea that came from my MIL’s garden about 8 years ago that’s putting out big purple blooms right now. What sweet serendipity to find those citrus mousse treats at TJ’s to match your jars! Love your peach roses and carnations in your mandarin jar too. As always it’s a treat to join you for some flower therapy! Thank you for the beautiful start to my morning ♥
Shirley, those French canning jars are fabulous and so are the flowers! I must agree with Mary, I am just a wee bit envious. It is always exciting to have the first show of blooms the following year after planting. I know your hydrangeas will give you many years of beautiful flowers. The mousse treats are a perfect complement to the jars. Poor hubby always seeing the sign, “do not eat the props”…I am sure he was excited to get the go ahead. I wish I had a local TJ’s for their flowers and food selections. It is a always a pleasure to share flower therapy for Monday Morning Blooms. Wishing you a lovely week!
Shirley, I know it was wonderful to cut blooms from your garden! I love your french canning jars and am always impressed with your knowledge of flower names. You keep good records or have a fantastic memory.
You have done so much this last year moving and decorating your beautiful home and landscaping your yard. You are amazing.
Great flower therapy.
Beautiful blooms in your oh so pretty vintage French canning jars Shirley! Your photographs are so artistically done, and your light filled home is simply gorgeous! I love that you put do not eat notes on your goodies, too funny…!
So much beauty, wild about your jars, I have an intense fondness for lemons! Your hydrangea color is unique, have not seen that before, its vibrant!
Hi Shirley,
The french canning jars are fabulous. How pretty. Happy New Week. Hope you are feeling great and doing well. xoxo Kris
I bought a dozen of the jars about 20 years ago and have used them for everything. I also have a lot of the Fostoria American pattern . Like your taste!!!
Love these arrangements.
Such a beautiful display in your lovely breakfast area, Shirley! Everything looks just beautiful, and what a wonderful spot to enjoy tea and sweet treats. You have such lovely sunlight shining throughout your home. Wishing you a most blessed and wonderful week ahead!
What a striking variety of blooms you’ve chosen Shirley! That hydrangea is truly unique in its coloring, so deep in its hue. Lovely!
Shirley, those French canning jars are so beautiful, I love ours, and have kept quite a few instead of selling them in our shop as planned. How thrilling to see your garden start to take shape, I know you will love your hydrangeas for all the years to come! I am always so excited to see ours bloom here in California. It’s a joy and a blessing to share our special Monday Morning Blooms together. Wishing you a lovely week! xo Lidy
That hydrangea is beautiful and I love the arrangement you made with them. All your vintage jars look wonderful together!
I love those jars so much! Your arrangements are beautiful.
Shirley,
I love your French canning jars. They’re lovely. My great-grandmothers, grandmother and mother were using canning jars (not French ones, just Ball canning jars) for flower arrangements for as long as I can remember. My sister and I now do the same as does my daughter. Canning jars, and even glass milk bottles, make for a different, and unique, way to display flowers.
Thanks for a lovely post.
