Christmas Decor in the Great Room

When I am “Decking the Halls”..

~ ~ one of the first rooms I decorate is our Great Room where we always gather.

Christmas 2013 Great Room

I usually start with the mantel.

With the large wood and iron shutters, it has become somewhat of a challenge to decorate it.

Christmas 2013 Great Room Mantel

This year is more of a more simpler woodland theme..

~ ~ well, as simple as this person gets.

Today, I am participating in Day Two of the “Deck the Halls” Holiday Home Tour.

I intended originally to have a “plain” garland ~

~ but could not resist adding some stems of white and silver leaves to add a bit of bling.

Christmas 2013 Great Room

Sammy the Squirrel (that was a tacky gift exchange rescue) ~ returns again this year..

Now moving over just a bit to the tree ~ ~

~ I wanted to change out the tree this year to a smaller one.

Definitely next year ~ after I hit the sales this year.

Christmas 2013 Great Room

The tree is placed at one end of the stairwell with branches actually going through the balusters..

~ a line of poinsettias at the base of the stair rails…

Christmas 2013 Great Room

A vintage French basket sits at the base of the tree holding packages and woodland decor.

~ a basket that I purchased from Kristen before it hit the antique booth floor!

Christmas 2013 Great Room

One of my favorite holiday stories and quotes ~

~ ~ *”Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus”*

You will find that quote in our media room, all year round _

~ ~ However, Virginia is replaced by our granddaughter’s name.

Christmas 2013 Great Room

This caroler is also one of my favorites.

Christmas 2013 Foyer

A Norman Rockwell figurine atop a antique Charles Dickens book, a collection of 5 of his novels.

~ ~ a great find as it is in excellent shape for being over 70 years old.

A beautiful print by William Mangum sits proudly.

The foyer table..

~ ~ By this date I thought I would have my Antique French buffet in this area..

~ ~ ~ however, it is on its way and can’t wait to get it.

The stained glass will be relocated to another area ~ the great Domino effect.

My Living Room Tree…finally!

Finally…”better late than never”…the living room is finally all decked out for Christmas…

DSC_6828

It takes a lot of going up and down a 10 foot ladder to deck a 12 foot tree…

…..I am getting too old for this…need a smaller tree!

However, it looks so “majestic” with the height of the ceiling.

DSC_6806

DSC_6807

I overlaid the green ribbon with a gold glittered ribbon…

…..for a little more bling!

DSC_6809

DSC_6831

Rather than line the foyer with poinsettias as I did last year..I chose a more natural look…

……I can hear my friend Linda applauding me now…

DSC_6808

DSC_6798

Rather than embellishing the garland with ribbon, etc..

…..I chose to leave it natural..adding a few birds here and there.

DSC_6801

DSC_6803

DSC_6801

The tree is filled with many sentimental ornaments…

…..like this “vignette” for my son…he played soccer…still does!

DSC_6834

Another “vignette” of “Florida” ornaments given to me by friends…

DSC_6776

The train “stained glass” ornament was my very first Hallmark ornament purchase!

DSC_6833

I love Christopher Radko ornaments…especially the “911” tribute collection…

DSC_6835

DSC_6836

DSC_6837

And then there are always the “travel momentos”…

…..bought this one on one of our “Christmastime” trips to NYC.

My friend Linda and I were browsing in the gift shop before the show…We spotted this beauty…but there was only one!…The clerk said that there were more across the street from the show…the show was starting soon…but we ran out of the Music Hall..crossed barricades and darted into traffic..to get another ornament!..What we do for a great ornament…We made the show just in time!…:)

DSC_6838

Tavern on the Green…so enjoyed our lunch there…so sad it is gone!

DSC_6839

I recently received this beauty from a friend…

…..she knows how much I want to go to France…She has been there many times…

So if I concentrate on this enough…I may someday go…hope so K & K!!

DSC_6840

I love my set of carolers that I place around the tree..

…..this is the other side of the tree…

DSC_6830

And now I am going to share some more “vignettes” around the room…

DSC_6772

DSC_6770

DSC_6812

I embellished my existing decor..something that I am going to do more of next year..

…..more natural….less is more.

DSC_6817

DSC_6818

The top of the secretary..I made the swag/garland..

…..and the print is a gift from my friend Sherry…the artist is from N.C.!

DSC_6819

DSC_6822

Hard to get a good pic of it due to the reflection…

DSC_6820

Glad you are hanging in with me with all these pics…have lots to share..

…..before Christmas!

Down the stairwell are two vignettes of Byers Carolers…

DSC_6792

Many of these have been generous gifts from family and friends…

DSC_6797

My Salvation Army Collection…below the Thomas Kincaid limited edition he painted after 911.

DSC_6795

DSC_6796

Here is my antique Salvation Army Hat…

DSC_6847

A few more tidbits around the room…

My fruit collection..

DSC_6826

A poinsettia in my Red Wing crock on the hearth…

DSC_6843

DSC_6827

And I leave you with one of my favorite Radko Ornaments….

DSC_6779

See you later with my large upside down tree in the sunroom…
