A Vintage Thomasville Desk Makeover

Do you ever yell, “S T O P” , while driving with your hubby . . .

~ ~ when you see an antique shop or a “sale along the road” ?

I do, and I must curb my enthusiasm, as I many times cause him to panic.

While driving through some back roads in Virginia . . .

~ ~ we came across an antique shop and an outdoor sale in front of the shop.

Vintage Thomasville Desk

I thought I had taken a picture of this desk when we unloaded it a while back . . .

~ ~ but apparently I did not . . . so “bad blogger protocol” set in with no “before picture”

The drawer fronts are veneer and had some wear on them . . .

~ ~ the top was actually fine, if it were sanded and re-stained.

So I thought with this “paint configuration” I would go with the painted top and drawers.

I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White.

Vintage Thomasville Desk

When we got this desk home, I discovered that it was made by Thomasville Chair Company . . .

~ ~ later, Thomasville Furniture Company – Thomasville, North Carolina.

The desk had wood casters that were in perfect condition.

I love the detail of this desk, especially the fluting and shape of the legs.

I guess I could have painted the entire desk, but loved the beauty of the stained wood.

Vintage Thomasville Desk

It rained most of the day . . . and while there was a break in the rain . . .

~ ~ we quickly brought the desk out to the driveway to take pictures before it went off to the booth.

I can also see this being a pretty vanity with a mirror hung above it.

I am hoping this desk will be going to a great home, as it deserves lots of love!

Have a great day . . . as it is a wonderful day . . . because it is the day my sister was born!

Happy Birthday Betty Ann!!!! . . . Love you sis!

The “Scoop Party”

A Sentimental Coat/Hat Rack Painted ASCP Old White

I have had this coat/hat rack for more years than I want to admit….

It was placed in the attic when we first moved into this house.

Then it landed in my hubby’s office…gathering sports memorabilia…

…..and whatever my granddaughter decides to hang on it.

DSC_0292

Painted this dark stained solid pine coat/hat rack stand with ASCP Old White.

DSC_0271

This is the before…

DSC_0266

This is where it was…covered with “stuff” in my hubby’s office…

…..but I should not call it “stuff” as one of the items is his treasured Master’s hat….

……….that was signed by many of the “past masters” including Tiger Woods.

DSC_0300

In my previous home, the coat/hat rack held my many “red hats”…

…..you know that famous “Red Hat Society”…yes I belonged!

DSC_0301

This was one of the very first hats I bought for our “Red Hat” group…”The Scarlet Starlets” !! 🙂

Originally, the hat had no flower, but I purchased this beautiful flower on one our our Red Hat outings.

DSC_0302

I believe I purchased the flower in the quaint town of Dade City, Florida…

…..our lunch event there was coordinated by me….we took turns hosting the events.

DSC_0334

And no event is complete without a great invitation (do you love my invitation??!!)…

DSC_0303

This is my friend Linda’s first red hat…she gave it to me when she moved away.

DSC_0289

Her move mad me sad, yet I know she was moving away from Florida, from family and friends…

…..for the same reason we were….our “potential grandchildren”.

So it left me with a feeling much like this empty hat rack..

DSC_0288

But in time, you meet new wonderful friends near and far…

DSC_0297

Like beautiful new hats…as this oh so Jackie Kennedy style pill box hat.

I am a sentimental person…always have been.

I hang on to things way too long…but then again, sometimes I am glad I did.

However, what is that saying?..”if you love it, you sometimes have to let it go”…?

Well, I cannot part with those hats…but the coat/hat rack has served us well..

…..and it is time to let it go..to the booth! But hatless, I must say!

DSC_0294

As great hats are like friends…you must treasure them and never let them go!

Note: Due to the the effects Tropical Storm Andrea…I was unable to complete my Friday Feature….

…..too gloomy for pics, so I will be resuming the feature next week!

Have a great weekend…hopefully yours will be drier than mine!!

Ever So Clever, Ever So Pretty Friday, #13 {A Nailhead Trimmed Table}

Hope everyone has had a wonderful week!..

Today’s project is “ever so clever AND ever so pretty”.

My inspiration for this week came from the talented and creative Laura, of Finding Home.

Laura’s blog is truly one of my favorites…I have been following her as long as I have been blogging.

I am sure that most of you are familiar with Laura’s beautiful home…her projects are always amazing.

So, here is my project today!

DSC_0319

A nailhead trimmed table with a vinyl top..

NailheadTrimUpholsteredTable_thumb

Here is the beautiful table that Laura made….and love the vignette too!!

DSC_0273

I started out with this $5.00 yard sale find and painted it with ASCP Old White…

DSC_0276

I added blue vinyl and nailhead trim that came in a roll..yes, a roll.

…..you place a tack in a designated hole about every 5th tack…cool beans!!

You can probably tell by my photos that I did this project at night…

DSC_0277

When I was purchasing tacks for this project, the girl at the fabric store showed me this “roll of tacks”….

…..and of course the individual tacks went back to the bin and this roll of tacks was perfect.

DSC_0278

The trim went on beautifully.

DSC_0312

This table landed in my guest room bath…

…..I love it here.

Taking pics in this room is a challenge as there is no natural light in this room.

A Foyer Makeover

I did it!!…I finally did it..

….Another major milestone for me….not much for most bloggers out there…

………but for me, I finally completed my first painted furniture project.

I must say, it was fun…and scary at the same time….

….For I was painting a piece that I have had for a very long time…a piece that was about 100 years old….

DSC_1063

From the pic, it looks in pretty good shape…but the top was truly not great…lots of deep scratches and burn marks
from the previous owner…this piece was purchased from an elderly woman who said it has been in her family for a long
time…this person was 85 at the time I purchased it 20 years ago for $50, along with 2 side chairs..such a bargain!

It is a Wisconsin Slider…a table that slides out to seat 12….

DSC_1065

All these years I kept a dresser scarf over it to hide the scratches and burn marks…could not be refinished as the
top is veneer….

DSC_1064

The table has beautiful carved legs…

DSC_1067

So here I go…painting away…

DSC_1068

and away….

DSC_1083

and then distressed…

DSC_1084

and distressed…A totally different look..

DSC_1147

This is the foyer before….

DSC_1260

And this is after…

Replaced the secretary and added the table, mirror and one more chair…
The mirror I painted a while ago…it is a mirror that I had since childhood…

DSC_1264

Come on in….

DSC_1256

DSC_1236

I found this lamp at HomeGoods a couple of months ago…waiting to place it on the “new table”….

DSC_1237

From across the room…

DSC_1232

Some carving detail…The foyer rug from Pottery Barn on clearance 🙂

DSC_1255

DSC_1253

DSC_1241

Caught a little rainbow…my room is a multitude of rainbows in the morning…reflections from the swarovski crystals
hanging in the windows….

DSC_1242

and another “magical rainbow”…

DSC_1249

Next project…to paint that darn a/c return!!…You can see where the secretary landed in the background…the linen chest was relocated to our bedroom…(that’s another future post)….

DSC_1235

The mirror that was my very first attempt at the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint….

DSC_1248

I am showing this image again…for MAYBE in a short while, this wall may change…

I told my hubby about these shutters I found…he went to see them and was smitten…so here is a sneak peek…
